Clean up advice

My advice is

'If you aint a dab hand at paint prep/repair/spraying, DO NOT try it yourself, find a small local bodyshop or a bike sprayer'

I have seen so many awful jobs that have been bodged and the frame ruined, also you must be carefull with Carbon. Don't rub too far or you will start to fray the strands.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm definitely going to touch up the rear of the bike as it's metal and leave the carbon section till later.

On another note, I left the house on the bike this morning and by the time I got to the end of the road the chain was jumping terribly. I think either the chain is catching on the hooks on the large ring and trying to shift up, or the freewheel is knackered. Does anyone have a idea of how I can confirm the source of the problem? I've put the bike in a stand and it all seems fine, the problem only surfaces under load.

Cheers.

ther are two choices,

1, :D The gears are out and just need a tune up (see any bike forum for advice)

2, Everything wears out and wears out together. You will need to replace the chain, rear cassette and worn front chainrings. Possibly the rear jockey wheels.

I've tried only doing half a job in the past but all that happens if you only replace some things is the old items make the new ones wear out twice as fast, Plus that if they work together at all.

Have a look at all 'cogs' and see if the have a pointed top or flat top. If the teth go to a point, BIN IT!

Here's what i mean.

GOOD

If you do have a go/get the carbon renovated, let me know how you got on/did it as I am considering the same for a carbon cadex which is a bonded frame, and whilst happy to give it a go myself (not too bad at spraying), I don't want to ruin the carbon. I got a quote from a frame builder for a refinish, and it was around the £300 mark - a little out of my price range by around £200.

On the subject of your gears, by the looks of one of your jockey wheels, I'd say your cogs/gears/chainrings need replacing, as the teeth shouldn't be pointed.

If it only happens under load then it's a worn cassette, chain and possibly chainring. If it was as simple as adjustment then it would occur even in the stand with no pressure.

Check the tooth profile on the cassette and chainring, paying particular attention to the smaller cogs. If they look like shark's fins then it's time to replace the cassette, chain and chainring (bear in mind that they'll be at least 2 teeth per sprocket that have this profile anyway to aid shifting). If you just change one then the problem will still occur as the old chain wears in to the old cassette.

I'd be interested as well because I need my Litage carbon re-bonding at the BB joint. I'd also like to get the lugs polished.

Which frame builder was it that you got your quote from?

After a closer inspection this morning (I had to run home, dump the bike and grab my other one yesterday morn) I think there is something definately up with the whole drive chain. Time to strip it down and start replacing parts I reckon. It's been over 15 years since I built up a bike, so I might post up some pics of the parts in question once they're off the bike so as to get some thoughts.

Oh also, does anyone know the largest frame size Pace produed the RC-200 in? The DBR has always been too small for me at 20" (by some way to be honest as I'm 6'5") and I really want to start building a classic rigid bike that fits and that I can use every day. I always had a thing for Pace & Merlin frames, though the later is most dertainly out of my price range!

Cheers,
Tom
