Classified rules updated here > http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17697

For those too lazy to check them out we've added the following

Rules

- No 'how much' posts in the main forum or elsewhere. If you really really need to ask how much your item is worth you may post on the "how much" thread here . We suggest you look in the classifieds, ebay or elsewhere if you are genuinely unsure of an items value.

Guidance

- Keep commentary on pricing to a minimum - the value of retro parts is very subjective.

Hey John
Well, that seems all fair and square, although I have issues with some of it
but
to balance maybe we need a buyers charter as well.....getting too many peeps on this wonderful site who seem to think it is reasonable to dibs and dabs stuff, only to fail to pay or ask further stupid questions....and my experience is not from newbies....that I can forgive, but 'experienced' members on here.
Of course this in totally unenforceable....but maybe a gentle nudge in the right direction for those whose manners are slightly lacking?

Carl,

good the hear feedback. but I'm not clear what exactly are your issues are?

Think the rules are fair - you only have to look at the carry on in the classifieds of certain (ahem) other sites to see what lack of direction can do...

As for a "buyer's charter" we can document something if people really feel it's worthwhile. However what is in place is sufficient in my mind. We don't enforce dibs - if you want to give someone dibs it's up to you. As long as the ad is listed fairly that is where the retrobike involvement should end - after that its up to buyer and seller to complete the deal. If a buyer agrees a price it's common sense they should come good on the deal. If people are messing others around like this (not something I've seen particular evidence of) feel free to leave bad feedback.

Actually John I have read your thread properly now  and the new 'whats-it-worth' thread is excellent and fills a void perfectly. Birthday celebrations last night  , surprised I managed to construct a sentence
Carl
PS Had wondered who pays for this site?

Yay! Two things annoy me about public/unlocked For Sale threads:

- Tyre kickers who shout 'dibs!' (generally serious buyers send a PM with an offer and payment details), then whine when a serious buyer actually pays for the item

- People who come along with 'How much?' or 'You only paid £XX for that' comments, yet have zero interest in actually buying what is advertised

But these minor gripes aside, the free for sale section has benefited me greatly as a buyer and seller so long may it continue :)

Carl,

could've been far worse ;-)
the site is paid for via affiliate links. so keep on clicking those links to ebay and banners to keep the site free and prevent whiny requests to 'buy us a pint/kebab'

We've been against dibs for ages. Once the seller posts his ad the first to say 'yes' and come through with the folding stuff gets it. Simple for everybody.

as for comments on threads lets try and keep it to a minimum.

The no dibs rule would work fine if all for sale ads had good clear pictures especially for expensive parts, Surely a potential buyer should have the chance to show interest first before committing. Then if the person backs out and is shown as a tyre kicker give them bad feedback so others are aware.

mmm, ok, this is going to be a tricky one, as it will not be easy to enforce. Like the idea of the "what's it worth thread", however...

Can we remind sellers about the bit in the classified rules that suggests that after an item is sold, the prices are left in place, and not replaced by the word "sold"? This is and will remain a really good indication of what something is worth roughly.

I think that in a lot of cases pictures should be made mandatory for items on sale too. Tough call maybe, but with a good clear description and pic's there should be less confusion about what people are actually getting for their money.

This is one for John,
I was wondering what the ruling is on items that get sold and the seller then removes the price once the item is sold.
I think that the price should have to stay on and then when a member does a search for referance on said items then at least we would have some idea of what items are selling for.
I hope you understand what I am waffling on about. :)

To answer the two points above.

1. Agreed it is definitely preffered sellers post a picture and full description
2. Also agreed sellers should leave prices in the ads.

both items are in the rules as guidance. We really want to see these adhered to, however they are in as guidance currently, the moderation effort to ensure everyone follows them would be too great.
