I agree with the last comment, both Tesco and CRC started as small 'local' businesses, they have become what they have become because people use them. Enough people must like what they do and offer for them both to have become and remain global companies. I worked for Tesco for 9 years before becoming a police officer. They gave me a full time job, development oppurtunities, a management position, half decent pay, ten percent discount and profit sharing. They are a good company giving many young people a real chance of having a career and if nothing else work/life experience for other jobs. Now as a customer I obtain club card vouchers for shopping there, that is in reality free money. I am currently in Cornwall on holiday and I am happy to say that Tesco paid for my fuel to get here and for a whole week travelling around down here. Crc won't pay for my fuel but offer most things cheaper and get them to me far quicker than Je James does, my local bike shop. I will continue to use crc, Tesco and any other lbs as and when prices/service dictates, that's what we call a free market!

On a light-hearted note about the CRC=Tesco comparison, at least (as far as I know) CRC doesn't issue carrier bags that look like a West Brom home shirt.

I would disagree. You'll be paying for it somehow. I wonder if that's why Asda is cheaper, because they don't offer loyalty vouchers. So those £200 clubcard vouchers you have are the £200 I have spent less at Asda. We both pay/get the same in the end. But Tesco now have your 'loyalty'.

I may be wrong, but suspect that's what is the reality.

Some interesting comments chaps...with respect, I think a few of you have very short-sighted views with regard to businesses such as Tesco....and to a lesser extent CRC.
A free market is a bogus concept when a few companies have too much market share...they effectively distort the market.

The problem with buying from CRC or any on-line seller is the 'weak link' the post office. It may never arrive then you have wait to get a refund or parts resent
No problem like that when buying direct (for me)

Its a tricky quandery for me as me local LBS is ran by a know nothing arrogant knob who wants £4.95 for a single cable inner and £7.95 for a tube :? .
My not so local LBS in run by a lovely old fella who has huge knowledge and experience, but he's rather roadie orrientated and over 20 miles away
So partly because i don't want to support my LBS and partly because of convenience i find myself buying more and more from CRC :roll:

To anyone that says you cannot find better bargains on CRC than an LBS, you need to take another look. I have had carbon cranksets, etc., for a fraction of their going price, and hundreds of other great deals.

A lot of this seems to be about a company getting big. It does not always mean they have become a profit over all else monster. I think CRC are a gem among online retailers.

True, but a set of fork seals and servicing part were £5 cheaper from my LBS - on the ticket price, not after a discount. You pays your money and takes your pick.
I have never had a bad experience with CRC, they are very professional and offer a good service. All I am saying is that CRC cannot run a tap through some BB threads at 5.25 on a Saturday or find me a left hand lockring for an obsolete bottom bracket.

I don't know about over there, but over here the parts still have to get from the whole saler to the shop. I have ordered something through the bikeshop once, never turned up, went missing somewhere in between. Not easy for the whole saler to send another one out to the bike shop!
