Carradice Sadlebag Advice

I also have an Ostrich handlebar bag in the old school randonneur style with lots of pockets etc. Great for dry day runs as they are pretty decent size.
I do usually use my Carradice trunk bag for day runs and audaxs etc as most of my bikes have a rack. Even my modern Surly Long Haul Trucker usually just runs a handlebar bag and my trunk bag for audaxs, randonneur runs etc only really gets the full works when touring.

As small as possible, as big as necessary ...

like Jamie I use a big camper long flap thing for shopping/ camping and it’s fab- but it’s big. I hook it up with a quick release and a rack for support. The qr is vital for shopping so you can bring it all in then unpack. (Used it with a Bagman support originally, but with big loads it tilted my saddle back in the clamp)

For day rides I go with a zipped roll: tools, jacket, tube, snack, phone. A tiny tardis. Straps and loops so a faff to remove though.

For a the occasional laptop or loaf, sounds like the college suggested above is the way to start. Start, because I suspect once you put a toe in, you’ll end up with a few different examples. They hold their value so you can buy-try-sell-repeat.

Oh and don’t forget to look at Ostrich: Japanese super cool retro canvas joy .....

I suspect your right about acquiring more because, both being ex couriers me and the missus have well over 10 messenger bags between us. However these don't allow your back to breath properly and also put a lot of weight on your shoulders, even when you have a good one. I can see myself finding ways to justify various different sizes of saddle bag now, even though the idea was to just find one that would work...

Ok, might actually consider the Nelson, how much better is the SQR vs the standard Bagman?

Night to day difference.
Don't think I'd ever use my Junior or Nelson LF without the SQR mount.

Thanks for Philip Wiliamson:

Btw, I can fit (just about) an 800gr load of bread in a Junior bag.
If I was to have only one bag, I'd use the Pendle. The Barley is ok only for the essentials on a single day ride, but not for any shopping.

So if your going to carry any weight the SQR? I think maybe prefer the bagman aesthetically and I won't be taking the bag itself off that much, but from what people are saying the sqr is the better support overall?

I was looking for that picture but I couldn't find it! Still debating between a Pendle and a Nelson, I wish their was something with pockets inbetween.
