Carlton Grand Prix 1980ish - Skip find.

Hi,

Found this Carlton Grand Prix in a skip a few doors down from my house, paired with the folding bike. I knocked on the door and asked the owner before taking them don't worry!! They were over the moon that the bikes could have a new life elsewhere.

The folding bike is possibly a bit far gone, but as I have two other folding bikes  it might yield some spares.

The Carlton looks to have been sat in the garage for at least 15 years, but likely more. Pumped the tyres up and oiled the chain, and it rides fine! I've done a few miles on it already, but it does need some minor attention.

Plans

- Tyres and tubes
- brake cables
- fit a replacement brake "safety lever"
- Tighten rear cones up
- Give it a wipe over, possibly minor rust repairs

Other than that I intend to roll it as is, it really is a charming bike, really comfortable and stable.

Re:

Thanks Chaps!

Saving things from skips is great. I'm always on the hunt for treasure.

It's not a high-end bike and it's a teeny bit big (hence the seat as far down as possible) but it's really comfortable to ride. All gears work perfectly.

Ordered a set of tyres / tubes & found a set of brake levers on here, so it's just a case of fettling it over the weekend and i'll likely press it into regular "popping to the shops" service.

Bless 8) I've always had a soft spot for the Grand Prix as it was my first proper bike. Same size too! It was stolen in Newcastle in around 1984

New tyres and tubes! I think the Gumwall sets off the orange paintwork quite nicely.

Also fitted a replacement "safety lever", set the brakes up a bit (need new pads), and gave it a slight clean. I started wire-wooling the front wheel but it proved too laborious for a sunny day, so gave up.

Took it on it's first proper "outing" on the road - performed perfectly.

I'm probably going to re-fit the rack at some stage.
