Carlton Criterium 1972

Well i hope you manage to get all the parts you decide on as i can see it looking fairly original with most of it's character restored as it was intended so it's really a case of asking those that have tackled this type of resto before in order to get a true feel of what's right for you before actually starting it ..

Re:

Well, the frame needs quite a bit of TLC in regards the paintwork.
I think this needs to be resprayed.
The problem is there's lots of paint scratched and missing. Frame is sound, no rust at all.
And forks are also lovely (as is the headset).
The blue/white colour scheme is also flaky and scratched.

I think I will go for a full blown renovation here and then keep the spec as close to original as possible. IF I can source some decals.

I will start by:

i) Sourcing the Carlton decal/transfer set for the frame (stays and down tube) - I've asked Gil but that;s a negative, he asked me to ask H Lloyd - I wonder if they will have this set? If not then I'm afraid the renovation project will have to cease as there will be no point to it - I will then just clean it up and build it to close original spec.

ii) Decide on whether to Powder Coat or Respray. This could turn out to be expensive if a respray. Could powdercoat. Let's see.
Armourtex do some nice metallic looking coating, and I will see if they can match or get close to the lovely violet colour of the frame.

ii) Look for some 27" wheels.

iv) Polish that headset/forks and the metal parts.

v) Put it together.

vi) Ride

Now for step i, once I've heard from H Lloyd or anyone else who has knowledge of where I can source these decals I will update the thread.

Cheers.

PS. The bottom bracket spindle length is for a single ring 5 speed and measures 130mm.

Nice looking, touch and go on the refinish. The rear stays with the almost wraparound finish are pure Carlton as is the chrome. It deserves a real flam finish, see if Chris Marshall can do it for you. Used to work for Pennine and understands the old finishes like the flam you have.

I'll stick my neck out here. That frame has what some would call an honest patina. It looks great. Clean, T-cut and wax. That is all it needs. To respray this frame, powder coat... whatever they call it these days, would be sacrilege. It simply does not need it. It is original only once. Don't do it!

This will be a class finish when it's done as i get the impression a lot of heart n soul is going into this 8) ..

Arrrgghhh!!!!
To spray or not to spray!
I wanted to spray, and then, and then Stressman, you've come along and spoiled it all!!! Now all of a sudden what you've said makes so much sense!

So while I ponder this, I need some advice and some thoughts:

a) The bottom bracket has a 130mm spindle - what threading would this be? English or Raleigh?

b) Shall I stick with the standard cottered - or a modern square tapered BB ?

c) What size spindle would be required for a front mech (10 speed) ? and what size clamp on the front mech?

d) Anything I would need to know about which brake calipers to use? Weinnman side pull from the early 70ies - any particular model or size or style?

e) There are some short Weinnman mudguards on eBay - anything I need to know about these? (ie. fitting/sizes etc)

f) What hubs did the original have on the wheels? Large flanged Maillard?

Some bikes I refreshed in the last few years, all with original paint which was 'play worn' lets say...

Ok, you've won me over! That red bike, the last one is drop dead gorgeous - what model is it? We wants it !!

A Clean, T Cut, Wax and Polish it is.
Followed by a go at the chrome.

Now how about my other points?

And What's the BCD of your 3 pin cottered cranks on your Criteriums?

:)

BB would be English thread/Raleigh 26tpi? Hubs large flange Normandy, Weinmann side pulls (alloy), yours is the 5-speed model. Cottered 3-pin detachable was the original chainset. Mudguards would be Bluemels shorties.
