Can steerer tube be made longer?

@danson67 is the man to contact, he extended my Kona project 2 forks and it’s a beautiful job!
Don't know about welding to be honest.
The joint would be in a critical point and I ride in quite hard terrain.
Maybe shortening the tube further and weld in a lower point, but still not sure...

That’s what he did for me. No stress points as such and likely to be a strong as any other weld on a bike.

Sid would be an alloy steerer.
I think it would be unwise to weld - ask @danson67
The quill extender shouldn't fit because the alloy tube has a thicker wall, so the interior diameter is smaller - and it shouldn't be used for this anyway.
You only live once, as they say.

You get a new steerer pressed in, or buy a fork with a steerer that's long enough. 👍

Good point, forgot about the aluminum factor!!!

Do not use one of those adapters above - they are for converting a quill steerer to take a treadless type stem. They are useful for opening up the options for a quill fork to take a 2 bolt clamp stem (which are hard to find in quill) or a 31.8mm stem to take modern bars, but you really need a threaded headset to hold the fork in first.

What you need is one of these...

There are cheapo options out there on eBay etc.

The adapter posted above has a taper which *may* align with a stem bolt, which I wouldn't trust. Not even with my bookmaker teeth.

For any adapter, you need to be certain that you have the lower stem bolt clamping the steerer, and the other clamping the extension part on the extender.

Safest bet is a new steerer or new fork.

Damn you bikes with short headtubes, making us all cut the steerers too short to fit anything else!!

You can get extenders, they are essentially a quill stem without the bar mount but I'm not sure how good they are, maybe some folk can feed back, I've never used one.

You can in theory have the steerer pressed out and a replacement pushed in. I've had that done before but you'll need to find someone who can do this.

You may be better off selling your forks and finding a set with a long enough steerer. What length is your current one and what do you need?
The bay ones are some of the scariest things I've ever seen. Some of the cheapest chinesium I've ever seen, and you can't tighten the headset up effectively when they're fitted. I bought one to see if it would work for extending the steerer of a wall hanger DH bike but even in that scenario it's useless, I certainly wouldn't ride one. You can get steerer tubes pressed out and replaced by most suspension tuners but the downside is that they're quite expensive. If you're competent and have access to a hydraulic press then you could DIY it using an aftermarket steerer but the downside is that most of the quality ones are only available through tuners, and the easily available ones are of unknown provenance.

+1 for the velobike option if you just want to extend by a short amount so that one of the stem bolts is still clamping on the steerer. They are available from Brooks Cycles in the UK but as with everything from that shop they are pricey.

I have seen short extenders like the above but much simpler with the extension turned down to a smaller diameter, of about 2 inches long, and bonded into the steerer with industrial strength stuff. A star nut was fitted into the steerer , before bonding in the extension , and a longer than usual bolt used to go through the extension into the star nut.

If both stem bolts clamp the extension then i would rather buy a new fork, press in a new steerer, or have a pro cut the steerer at the right place and weld on an extension.
