Campag BB Question

I have just picked up a Basso frame and forks from my good friend The History Man, and the first workshop session has produced the first question.

The BB is Italian thread and 70mm, with a total axle width of 117mm.

The BB is an adjustable ball race type, and the axle is black.

I started to dig on Velobase, but then thought it would just be more sensible to ask here.

At 117 width, what cranks would this BB suit?

If it's asymmetric and good old cup and cone then it sounds like a post 1978/79 Italian BB for a Nuovo Record Strada / GS double.

At the end of 1978 for some reason Campag started messing with the BB's that has been the same for the last 20 years. Maybe it was due to the shorter wheelbase frames about maybe it was just for a change................... but the BB axles became longer and the design of the cranks themselves changed.

Velobase is often better than my fading memory though LOL

Thanks Shaun, but trawling backwards and forwards through Velobase has not produced much, as not all listings are complete, and often the axle length is what is missing.

I wondered if it may have been designed for a triple set up, not that this would suit the frame at all, but we never know what previous owners have been up to.

Maybe my best bet is just to pull it out and fit a BB that suits the as yet unpurchased cranks.

I just realised that I have forgotten to date the frame, which is from 1990 or thereabouts.

Just to confirm, is it asymmetric? The post 1978 axle was 114mm for a double add 2mm extra for Italian and that's about the length you have. Triples are a lot longer. Mind you with a 1990's frame that's way after my time lol

I'll make some detailed measurements later, but that looks just like it.

It would also be about the right level within the Campag range for the model of frame.
