Calling Konaheads - Help needed Kilauea Replacement Headset

Dirt Disciple
Been lurking for a while this is my first post....

Bought a '93 frame and fork on eBay to graft all my shed spares onto and build into a singlespeed :-)

It arrives without any bearing cups for the Impact Headset :-(

Head tube is 150mm, Steerer (1 1/8") is 183mm, Threaded portion of steerer is 30mm

Impact had no spacers etc and is a low profile design, threaded portion on the headset is 18mm deep.

From experience or knowledge, or even inspired guesswork, what else will fit?

PS now in discussion with seller over partial refund as this obvious problem was not disclosed in the description and he has now admitted via email that it wasn't complete and he knew it.

Pesky ebay sellers. I bought a helmet on ebay this week, arrived yesterday. Supposed to be medium, turns out to be XXS/XS. How the hell do they make that mistake??? :x

So, you need a headset with a 33mm stack height.

Do you still have the lockring from the Impact headset?

I used an XTR headset on my 1992 Lava Dome and just got away with it as it has a 34.3mm stack height.

On my 1996 Lava Dome, i had to be a bit more creative. I used the bottom half of an LX headset, the top-cup and lock ring from the original and the upper bearings from a Dia-Compe

Do you still have the crown race from the original Impact? If so the easist might be to post a wanted ad for some Impact cups then buy some new bearings from your LBS (assuming you've got the lockring).

So the crownrace is the bearing face fitted to the fork yes? Yep got that an it is in pretty good nick.

Got the lock ring and allen bolt and that looks fine as well.

All I'm missing are the frame cups.

So I could build

a)some kind of frankenheadset using frame cups and / or bearings from another headset
b) find a NOS XTR?
c) see if anyone has some good nick impact cups and rebuild as stock

(or I guess d) display more money than sense and get a Chris King)

I'm not that fussed about originality but don't want to do any surgery that would stop someone converting back to original spec if they/I wanted to...

As with TP, I installed an XTR headset on a 94 Kilauea (now Thorpies)...no problem...don't know if that helps you though :?

any clues as to where an NOS XTR threaded headset could be bought from? My googling isn't having much success.

Erm...yeh, not easy to find...I bought mine from Finland
Pop a 'wanted' up...I'm sure someone here might be able to help.

IMO your seller is the same as mine. They made no mistake. They knew EXACTLY what they were doing.

My local shop had a couple when I last went in there about three months ago, could have a look if you were interested, no promises though.

Don't exactly get on with them and only usually get things like cable ends or if i'm feeling generous a bottle cage bolt or two.

Post a wanted ad, or search through the for sale section. XTR aren't too difficult to find in 1 1/8", but they may not be cheap :?

I've seen people asking twice what i paid for my NOS one.
