Bureaucracy (I tried, I really did...)

Today, I could not save a pair of very decent looking Mavic M6 oxygen rims laced to Shimano large flange deerhead (mn72) hubs from the tip. I didn’t even want them for myself, or for the monetary value, just that as original equipment on Conquest’s (well the hubs at least) I couldn’t bare to see them skipped.

I rang the manger and everything... perhaps I should have just nicked them?

Rant over. I know this topic has been discussed many times before but it’s still sad.

Sigh....

It happens all of the time. Councils hide behind non existant rules regarding recycling. Rules that actually promote re-use as well as recycling get troddon over in the name of equally non-existant health & safety. It needs abig shake up but it 'aint gonna happen anytime soon.

The biggest issue here is simple..insurance.

The councils are so scared of someone getting something from a tip then suing them that they are finding it safer just to say once dumped it stays dumped.

Also if you have ever been to a dump in the fens it can get so bad the pikeys and eastern europeans are literally looking in the back of you car as you pull up.

Not so much the councils fault but SOME individuals who have spoilt it for others.

I've never done it... But maybe I'll start, to keep the stereotype strong :P ;)

"Eastern Europeans" ... yeah they're a bad lot them from Hull... :D
But apparently we are extremely hard working fellas! And I really haven't got a loads of paperwork to be processed in front of me... And I don't use the "alt+tab" key combination every time someone walks nearby...

It maybe unpolitically correct to be honest but I can assure you if you use Wisbech, Kings lynn or Peterborough refuse centres you will see my point.

It doesn't however change the fact that the councils are now trying to ban individuals reclaiming other individuals thrown away items

I really don't care about the political correctness if there is a sense in what is being said. I understand your point, I find it annoying as well - but it is not so bad in the part of the UK I live.

in principal, i agree.

the term "re-cycling centre" is often contradicted round here too. the local councils should display disclaimer notices on the xy and z of 'if anybody removing goods for whatever purpose does so at own risk' sort of thing and let folk re-cycle usable kit.

on a better note, there are organisations that occasionally beat the councils and 'waste metal dealers' to it by actively seeking dumped bikes from suburbia and canals and, do them up to a ridable state. the idea is to flog them on for cost covering amounts and give some of those serving at H.M.P other uses for hand tools.

one in york i'm visiting soon for a rummage round
