Quick request of those experienced shipping a well and properly packed frame from the U.K. to suburban Washington, D.C.

Are there options? Best and safest? Ball park cost estimates?

Many thanks.

A quick quote through parcelmonkey with 105x15x45 dimensions & a 6kg weight gives a £59 cost via DHL air freight 1-2days

Interparcel with the same dimensions quote £61.75 with FedEx priority 1-3 days (only £50 insurance which you can increase)

Check out P4D & parcel2go also as dependant on your dimensions it can affect the cost quite a bit. It is the volumetric weight which is important rather than the actual mass.

Don't go through FEDEX direct as you'll get charged double.

Excellent suggestions. Seller and I are taking our time. No rush, no stress. Thanks for the tips on searching. Exact dimensions are still to be determined, but this is a great starting point.

Again. Thanks.

Also check http://www.worldwide-parcelservices.co. ... 4wod5Va9IA they do DHL, the insurance for a £250 package is an additional £7.50 making £68. The other prices are based on a basic compensation cover only.

Transglobal came in at £43 https://www.transglobal.org.uk/get_quote.asp not sure what level of compensation is included in that.

Also don't forget that US customs start to get interested in packages that are over $100 in value if a 'gift' or $200 if a commercial purchase or shipment sent to yourself for personal use.
If the value stated is over $200 you are likely to be hit with Import duty on the full amount plus handling charges.

Hope that helps

Thank you. I'm sure others will find this information useful, as well.

I've long been under the impression that US$400 was the "trigger" point for interest by US Customs.

There is also something about antique values. Apparently, being listed in the Hetchins registry has already set a precedence in a decision to waive fees on declared value.

I'll follow up at I learn more.
