Best Canti's?

Hello neil.....

Have you a pic or a model name of them pads...never seen them but think the ones in my lbs were something like swisstop or something.....cant remember but the nylon bit was seperate and pushed over the stud and was shaped to contact the rim and flex outwards well before the pad hit....

They were Koolstops - I've got some on one of my bikes, somewhere.

It wasn't a nylon / plastic add-on to the pad, it was the shape and design of the pad itself.

Not sure if I've got any in packets any more, I've definitely got at least one pair on a bike, though.

we are thinking of something different neil......where is fluffy.....he would have a link or pic of the ones I mean..... :?

He doesnt go out much

Hmm, I'd like to see those.

Here are the Koolstops-I just happened to have a NIP set in the bin. I really have way, way too many parts hanging around these days

You can see the little 'wiper' part, it hangs down a bit, and mentioned on the packaging.

Those are the jaspers I was talking about.

The pads on my kcnc had that little bit on them also...but it made them a pig to set up so I cut it off with a stanley knife.......dont go out in the rain anyway so no probs

Can someone explain why it's better to have the front of the pad contact the rim first (toe in) as opposed to the back (toe out)? I'd think if the back hit first, it would serve as a 'wiper' and clean any debris/water from the rim surface before the full pad makes contact.

When you apply the brakes the force generated forces the brake bosses to both spread and twist away from the wheel, changing the angle of the pad, causing the back of the pad to contact with greater force, and the pads to shudder (squeal). Toeing the pads in compensates for this. 1mm is a guideline. Ideally you want your pads to have just enough toe in so under full braking the back of the pad will barely be contacting the rim. The amount will vary with different forks/seatstays, as they all flex and twist differently and under a different amount of pressure.

Has nobody ever designed a little wiper that would hang off the back of the pad to do a bit of housekeeping on the braking surface before the pad hits the rim? A bit of overkill I suppose, but it sure would be handy in the wet. I wouldn't be surprised if it was attempted and fell into the 'gimmick' category.

There were several. They went the way of pink lycra.

I'd think that little tab hanging off the back of the Koolstops would create a similar problem unless you compensated for it somehow.

I've got some foul-weather (red compound) WTB pads from back in the day-the instructions basically state they are for 'breaking in' rim surfaces, or extreme conditions-if they are used continually, plan on a new set of rims every year!

Yep, that's what I figured-'gimmick' category.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, excellent.

Eh?

IME, the sticky-out bits make them easier to set-up.

Not really neil as the cable pull of the kcnc levers isnt really sufficient for the vs they are designed to work with so when you set the brakes up with the rear bits just clearing the rim the lever nearly hits the bar before stopping you, when the sticky bit has been removed you can get the pads closer to the rim...Damn things.....glad I am out of them
