im looking to getting a pet dog in the near future...i wanted one for years and have talked it thru and talked about whats involved ect...we settled on 2 breeds ideal for a family as per the title...has any one got any insight that i may have missed in owning said doggie type that they may care to share...

Two of our friends have beagles, both from pups. I can pass there numbers if you fancy a chat to them. From an outsider they are real funny characters , proper pains as always up to something , always looking for food .... And always grumpy!! I love them

My in-laws used to have a Basset Hound. Was a great dog. Came across as quite lazy, but if you took it out for a walk it could pack a few miles in. Was a bit slobbery though.

my boss/wife informs me she would prefer the basset hound as they are more docile?.....thank you for the info ..i shall bear that in mind when we get closer to the day....

just like the boss/wife then...sounds cool...are they gentle dogs or a handful then..?

Their Bassett was fine, very good natured. Would play if you wanted to, but was happy enough sat on you feet when watching tv. It also had the amazing ability to increase it's weight ten-fold when you wanted it off your feet or tried to bath it. Was a great dog :)

My brother and his girlfriend have a beagle. Theirs is great with kids if you have any and very loving and affectionate but does need lots of exercise (i.e. proper off the lead runs not a trip to the shops or round the block). Its not the most obedient of dogs either - I think they have the second best sense of smell after bloodhounds and are renowned for wanting to follow their noses even if it causes them grief. Theirs also does the worst smelling poos I've ever witnessed, but that may not be breed specific!

Beagles, being hounds, have a tendency not to come back when called.

Bassetts are stunning puppies but have their fair share of skin and joint problems in adulthood iirc.

As with most breeds, pick your poison.. none are perfect.

Like the avatar - is that your own moggy? Reminds me of our own much-missed (a good innings at 17 years though) family cat! :)
