i can understand somebody have a variety of bikes
a few to ride
a few to cherish
a few to rebuild
after that i always feel they are being 'hoarded'; and that they should be out in the world being enjoyed by somebody

Couldn't agree more: 4 or 5 to ride; 4 or 5 to cherish; 4 or 5 to rebuild ; plus others, uh you know...just because.

Sorry, but I'm not riding my Merckx "De Rosa" with Campa 50th groupset when I have 15 others. Some bikes need to be preserved over time for generations to come.

Needs to be ridden a little to really enjoy. Just pick your days.

I like the idea of using weather as an excuse, I must remember that when the postman comes with a big box.

Last week we had a day which was foggy then sunny, windy then wet, mild then freezing - 6 bikes!!!

Thanks for that,

Richard

My mate has the same attitude but he has 30 or more mint bikes and only rides just three shitters

Bikes should be ridden and not be shelf queens! Yes you can admire them for yourself
but the best enjoyment is going out and riding them to enjoy what they was made for
or going out on the 'best bike' on a Sunday clubrun and everyone remarks how lovely
that old machine is, that feeling is far greater than just looking at it hung on a wall.

If you are scared of marking the inside of big chain-ring by going on the big ring then
just don't go on it, also bar tape can be kept clean by using new mitts, also dust can't
really harm the bike, enjoy them for as long as you can.

My Raleigh Road Ace as already covered 30 miles and that is/was a NOS bike
but is in no worse a state than when I jumped on it.

Richard! Stop bloody hoarding stuff :?

Ian.

I wonder if people who collect other items have this same debate. If I had to guess I would say yes…particularly if the collectible was originally intended to be used like automobiles. Lladro figurines? maybe not...

I could understand not using a bike if that actual machine was used by a pro' rider like Hinault or Fignon
but many really high quality machines was mass produced and not a limited run so there are a few hundred
of these knocking about, so get on em' and enjoy them before you are unable to do so, thats what I think anyway
