The whole country is pretty much closed. When has that ever happened before.

When the country ran out of petrol in Summer 2000 due to the blockades

Can't believe that was 10years ago!

I remember having 1/2 tank of fuel when I was in uni in Manchester, went out at the height of the crises all smug, the roads were virtually empty :D

"Meanwhile the quiet, clear blue skies above the UK have prompted speculation over what the world would be like without contraptions.

Professor Henry Brubaker, of the Institute for Studies, said: "According to my computer, it would take ages to get to Australia, but, by the same token, it would also take an awfully long time for Australians to get here. Which would, of course, be excellent."

It was weird as the days went on seeing less and less cars on the road

I've never driven a car so steadily in all my life as I did back then!

Of course, there are plenty of aircraft in the air all over Europe.

Unfortunately, because none of them are landing in Britain, it looks as if Karen and I will be travelling to Greece the long (and expensive) way next week.

So that's boat to Liverpool, train to London, 22 hours on a coach to Milan (because the train would be too expensive). Then train from Milan to Ascona and then 17 hours on the Superfast ferry to Patras.
Another five hours after that and we'll be there, I hope.

Well, we're not due to depart until the 27th of this month (a week from today) but, of course, there are no guarantees that the situation will have improved by then. If things are still as they are now and we still can't fly, then that's a bit last minute to be making reservations.
Plus, if our original reservations are cancelled then we'd be right in there with thousands of others all trying to do the same thing - it could drag on for weeks and we can't be at Gatwick Airport with a couple of hours notice, it's not like we can drive there.

Some of the tickets are refundable but the boat to Liverpool isn't unfortunately, and the train from Milan to Ancona has a cancellation surcharge .
If we had a car that I though stood a chance of getting us there and back I'd drive there - I don't reckon we'd get too far though.....
