Ash??Surely a conspiracy?I'm not so sure.

I've just been talking to a mate who is head engineer for a big commercial freight airline and they are shatting themselves. He has had to lay off all the contractor staff today and he says that if they are not back to normal within 10 days the company will be bankrupt. They are the biggest freight company in the UK too so will how the smaller supply companies around them cope?

Btw, their biggest customer is Royal Mail, he said if you saw the size of the backlog you would have a fit! So anyone waiting for bike trinkets.......

People always think companies have an endless money pit to compensate and ride these things, truth is far from it, and so many livelihoods depend on small businesses. I know from the business we had that just a days interruption in production can have severe consequences later.

Airlines are already commenting on government bail-out. . .

What would you have them do, as a company they must try everything to stay in business, it's an obligation to the shareholders and to the employees. If they aren't bailed out then the government ends up paying out dole instead... so which way would you have it? And it's not just a particular airline that will be lost, there are many supporting companies, caterers, maintenance, airports etc. who will suffer and possibly fall as well. At the end of the day it's people livelihoods. Small company owners put a lot into a business but are very tightly squeezed through red tape and taxes so most are on tight margins anyway without hickups. Really, small companies are and have been the backbone of Britain and have provided much wealth to the nation over the years, so it's only right to help them when times are tough. (Please exclude Banks from all that, they are a different kettle of fish and have caused this recession, oh and look up fractional reserve banking :x )

rant over :D

Genuine volcanic ash,10,000,000 years old

You sure it's ash? Cars here are dusty, and so are the roads, but it hasn't rained here for two weeks! Always gets dusty when there is no rain to wash things off. Not saying it's not ash, just a thought.

It's most certainly ash; it's the same down here and no doubt everywhere. Normally i can chamois the car over with warm water to remove the film of dust, but when i washed it at the weekend this stuff took more work to shift. So christ knows what it's like up above the clouds.

im waiting on goodies from the USA and europe, looks like it will be a long wait :?

sky news is saying most of the UK will be opened at midnight.

Not often I would agree with this, but in this instance there is some merit. I think the consequences are going to be more severe than we imagine.
Drove past Heathrow today and signs simply say closed. The whole country is pretty much closed. When has that ever happened before.
On the bright side, it's the first time I've ever driven up the M25 and back without stopping a few times. Lovely traffic.
