Anyone live in the Doncaster area

I'm in the final stages of a divorce, will have little savings left after, have little family here in Hampshire and work 100% from home. So I'm currently looking at other places to live that are more affordable.

One area is Doncaster, as could get a decent size house with a garage, I've made a few visits and seems just as nice as where I am currently.

Anyone from that area that could give a real world view. Areas I'm looking at are: Armthorpe, Kirk Sandall and Edlington.

Cheers.

I’ve a good mate that moved from Doncaster to my area and I frequent the area often (usually buying bikes).

I’m sure there are nice areas but I wouldn’t actively move to Doncaster personally unless it’s for a reason.

Pretty much anywhere north is cheaper than the south. Pick somewhere that’s nearer the peaks or Moors with a less city feel.

Doncaster is quite flat so good for those long, flat rides and there's plenty of off road opportunities too on old farm tracks. Big wide skies which is welcome on those dull winter days.

Doncaster town centre is half decent with good transport links - it's near motorways and on the east coast rail line.

Old Edlington, Tickhill, Stainton etc and surrounding villages are quite quaint and historic but you're always in close proximity to poor areas. Eg. New Edlington, Maltby (that's actually Rotherham) have some real rough areas. Armthorpe can be rough too

North of Donny, places like Wroot, Crowle and Fishlake are quiet and Rural. And then there are small towns like Hatfield and Epworth that aren't too bad

Now the big two ......
First, over the last few years, with the effects of climate change, lots of areas in Doncaster have suffered repeated severe flooding. Home insurance is either astronomical or uninsurable. Families have lost everything and are awaiting the next continued rainstorm with fear. Make sure where you choose hasn't been affected or is next by being in a flood plain
Second, there are plans in place to reopen the Doncaster -Sheffield airport so that may bring increased noise and traffic

Really depends on what you're looking for. There's budget and there's budget. I work and live nearby. I'd avoid those three you've suggested if you can. There are some really nice areas. The only problem is it's a big leap in price range for the nicer areas - Bawtry, Austerfield, West Bessacar, Barnby Dun, Edenthorpe, Hatfield... in part because many of them are 'away' from Doncaster itself. Plenty of new builds going up though. Anything that backs on to / near the River Don is at risk.

Retford's not bad. Worksop, possibly.

The cheaper areas are like that for a reason. I moved back this way in a similar situation to you, but I grew up here. Now I've sorted out my situation I want to move away. I don't like it, and don't recognise what was once 'home'. Elderly parent is the only tie.

Once you hit the Isle of Axholme and much of the Lincolnshire side of Doncaster - beyond Thorne, towards the River Trent and Goole - it's mostly floodplain, and when it floods its in a Somerset Levels kind of way. So places like Sykehouse and Fishlake are risky.

That said, some of the better villages might be out of reach. Haxey, Westwoodside, Owston Ferry, Epworth, Tickhill, Mattersey, Clayworth, West Stockwith, Misterton, Walkeringham, Gringley on the Hill, are all lovely but don't come cheap.

If you like rugged countryside, have a look at Stocksbridge, Penistone - good for a laugh - Oxspring - the Peak side of Barnsley (avoid) is alright. Holmfirth is nice.
