first thing to do is check the camshaft from one end to the other as these wear from the rear of the engine forwards.

That's funny - mine went at the front... proper rounded the whole lobe off...

Found it when I was investigating why it wouldn't rev past 4000...

While I love V8 Land Rovers from a driving point of view, I have to say I'd be very cautious about the LPG conversion. I know the Rover V8 is uncomplicated but I'd still be wanting a good test drive to see how well the conversion was done... the cheap open loop systems are not great.

There's also the slight problem of the LPG tank(s)... if you have a decent size tank in the back it fairly compromises the available load space.

If I were spending my own money, I'd take the 200Tdi, despite not being a diesel fan... IMHO it suits the vehicle perfectly, better than the older 2.5 engines and better than the electronics-reliant TD5 (not driven anything newer than that).

Now if a 2.5 Diesal does 27-30 mpg (200 tdi) and a V8 on gas does 12-15 mpg but at half the price on fuel

Does that work out the same on running costs? :? There is no reason why the V8 should be looked upon as costing more to run? :shock:

Or have I been eating to much toblerone this afternoon?

as you know im a ex landy tech (remember the mint rangie lpg classic i had when i picked the bike up??) and as much as i love v8,s (i now have a 4.6 p38 range rover) i would have to say get a tdi :shock:
the v8 on gas WILL cost more to run on fuel yes even lpg and there is the higher running temps involved with burning the lpg and as we know the rover v8 is marginal on cooling at best (on the 3.9+ engine size more so)
The tdi is also a very rugged engine that does reliable plodding very well as long as the filters and cambelt are changed on time.
My discovery 300tdi before the current rangie was allmost as fast with uprated fuel pump/intercooler/de cat/de egr/performance exhaust etc etc and did 35mpg all day long and was 90% as quick as the rangie classic, in the real world its the most sensible choice
and if your going to use it off road the v8 hates water BIG time!!

What Land Rover doesn't have a few niggles? :) I think the TDi was a good choice... what are those cappings all about though? Are they wooden?
 
so does it float with those tyres?

Very nice, I'd like one again despite my last one being a cut and shut pile of shite (I was young and naive)
