Ever heard of Shazam?
If you're listening to something and can't quite pick what it is, you can play it down your 'phone and it texts you the details

On a slightly more academic note, there have been a number of studies on "Query by Humming" where you can get very close to the music you're thinking of by entering "higher, lower, higher, same" for the pitch of the notes. Something like 7 notes gets you pretty close if memory serves.
Doesn't work for video yet, though
