Another 1950’s adventure (Viking Ian Steel Model)

Thanks for rack advice.

Decided on black.

Anodised worn off braking surfaces, think silver slivers add to the overall look.

Did some routine maintenance today, was surprised (even shocked!) to find that a few rear wheel spokes were really loose.

Hadn’t noticed because wheel was still running true.

Just going to mention that Cyclo Benelux mark 7 front rod shifter (1953) works really well.
My 1953 Holdsworth Whirlwind was originally 5 speed so no braze on for FD shifter.
I originally also tried Cyclo Benelux tourist 5 speed rear but the action is too heavy for me so went SunTour Cyclone mk1 GT.

“50/32 + 13-32 (SunTour New Winner ultra 6)”

Yeah that’s nice gearing.

I don't really need 50 these days!

Bit surprised front mech can handle the difference. Good to know.

“SunTour Cyclone mk1 GT”

One of my favourites - got one when they first came out, plus ultra 6s - in the days when (some) shops had sprocket boards and you could choose!

14-16-18-20-24-30 I think.

The rod shifter is specced at max 20 tooth difference.
I had to buy a work stand to adjust the vertical position for 18 gap.
It works surprisingly well once you get used to reaching for it.

Cogs are 13-15-17-20-24-32, so 18 gap on the front is max wrap + 1.

Interesting

“The rod shifter is specced at max 20 tooth difference”

Surprised at that - comes from the era when THREE tooth gaps were ‘normal’.

“max wrap + 1” - won’t be a problem for the ST.

Not everything was corncob: the Cyclo Benelux mark 8 Tourist RD (1957) is 5 speed, 35 wrap, max cog 28.
But it is chain pull.
