Am I unlucky ?

Within 2 months I've destroyed 2 Panaracer Cinder rear tyres.

The first was down a steep hill. The thin/non knobly part of the tyre was punctured by a sharp stone or similar. Because I was going quite fast it took about 50 yards to stop. The sidewall was trashed and there was a hole where the stone had punctured the tyre.

I fitted anotehr new cinder and a similar thing happened last night.

I have tied to cover up the hole in teh tyre, but the patch I use just get pushed ouy and you end up with a small section of patch and inner tube being pushed out. I would not want to trust it on a long ride, and hence why I now consider the tyres to be junk.

Is this common, or does it just happen with cinders ?

the sidewalls on these are a bit fragile ,seem to tear quite easy
there was a thread on shonkytrack about a wee while ago

mine however ,have been fine

what sort of patch are you using?
when i was a kid i used to fill the eggys on my bmx tyres with a cut out from another tyre, alot wide and try to wrap it round so it sit between the tube and rim also

I'll try and get a few pics up tonight.

In both cinders (2.1 and a 1.9) the non-knobly bit was punctured and it ripped the tyre. I've used a regular inner tube patch to stop teh inner tube extruding its way out.
But the risk is that 20 miles from home it could rip the tyre even more. It's a pisser as each tyre is only about 200 miles old !

Have you tried a Park Tyre Boot for a repair?
I always took one touring, but have never used it, so I don't know how good it is...

I have used the Panaracer Fire XC Pro tire for years and never have had any problems with them! I am currently using the Tubeless version of the XC Pro and am very happy with it. Tubeless tires have a beefier carcass and are even better than the non tubeless version- I usually put them on with some Stan's Sealant inside and ride them 'til they are worn out-with No Flats for the life of the tire-then fit new ones and repeat! I ride about 4000 dirt miles a year and go through 2 or 3 pairs of tires a year.

I've used gaffer tape to fix holes in tyres, been fine since 2007!!!
