I'd also be keen on anyone's guesses at an approximate year, as I really don't have any pointers. The angles on it seem quite slack, so eighties I guess? The parts I have so far aren't necessarily all that close in era and might end up being a bit of a mix, though they're mainly European, so I was concerned whether the early Nukeproof wheels I have will seem right.

Does anyone remember Charlie's Cycles in Bulwell? Seemingly the owner before it closed was called Marc. A long shot, but if anyone knew him and has any suggestions how to get in contact that would be amazing.

I used to go in here with my Dad. It was at the bottom of my grandparents road. It was a tiny place with bits and pieces hanging from the ceiling. I think he sold Giant bikes in the mid nineties.

Charlie's Cycles was run by a chap called Charlie McCready. I used to work with his wife Barbara and her son Richard ( who was a very good friend of mine ) also worked in the shop. As previously described, it was a small ramshackled shop that did Raleighs, Townsends etc, but could also supply you with custom built stuff. I often went in there as I usually got a discount. Charlie retired possibly mid-late 90's and the aforementioned Mark chap bought the shop.
 
I'm not too far away from being able to build this up now. The rear wheel isn't built, but most the parts have been chosen. I am going to use Suntour XCE thumbies as they are the most silver ones available.

As is often the case, I'm struggling to find a solution for brakes that I find satisfying.

These are the possible options I've thought of:

* I have a set of Suntour XC Pro levers in champagne, which I would love an excuse to use, so could look for the matching cantis - I'm not sure the colour would be right here though, as I'm aiming for mainly silver.

* I have a pair of STM cantis I would love to use, but the chances of finding matching ones are incredibly slim and I'm not sure what brake levers I would use.

* I have some Dia-compe XCE cantis on the way, which I was thinking of using

* I could use Sachs 5000 cantis, which would fit with the Sachs derailleurs.

If I went for one of the last two options, I'd still need to decide which levers to use with them, assuming I don't fins some I had forgotten about.

* If I was using the Dia-compes then I like the design of Dia-compe XCE Short Stops, but they are too black for this build, so I would have to at least strip the black from the bodies.

* Having searched for levers I like (I always struggle) I actually quite like these by 'Contec':

but since I know nothing about them I guess they are fairly low end. Having said that, if they function well and aren't too heavy that should necessarily disqualify them.

Any other suggestions? Ideally, I'd like to stick to parts that are predominantly silver.

Still no decision on brakes and still not shifters yet, but I finally have a matching rear wheel built up to go with the front wheel I picked up stupidly cheap years ago.

I'm not too far away from being able to start building this up now.

Thinking about the frame, the paint has plenty of damage and scuffs, but I want to keep it as I love the colour and don't mind the patina. On that basis, I was wondering whether I should try to carefully apply Kurust to the areas where the bare steel is exposed or whether it will be fine without. It's obviously been that way for awhile and there's not much corrosion and I have also treated the inside of the tubes with rust inhibitor. The thing with Kurust us that it turns the area black, which is usually fine but I thought it might stand out here, given I'm using mostly silver components. Alternatively, I have plenty of LPS3 rust inhibitor which I have used previously to treat bare steel frames which is pretty much invisible, so I could just regularly apply that - after checking it doesn't affect paintwork.

Any opinions?

Also, if I can find a decent grey/silver saddle would that work or would that be too much on a silver seat post?

I'm really hoping to get this finished by summer so I can get out and ride it.
 
I've not actually been able to test it yet, so there is some concern it will be a bit small, but then I've just done 30 miles on my 16" S-Works and thoroughly enjoyed it, so hopefully it will be fine :)
