A nice Stronglight headset would look the part IMO

Good suggestion :)

I'd forgotten about this one. Couple of nice parts you've chosen there :-)

Probably because my two build speeds are 'Crawl' and 'Pause' :D

Thanks and thanks for the suggestion. I'm just trying to clean and polish the frame and forks a bit this morning.

We sir, are kindred spirits in the build department

I realised I haven't mentioned this, so I took a picture whilst cleaning:

An online search reveals apparently the shop closed in 2007, which is a real shame as that might have been my only real shot of finding out more information about the frame.

Does anyone remember Charlie's Cycles in Bulwell? Seemingly the owner before it closed was called Marc. A long shot, but if anyone knew him and has any suggestions how to get in contact that would be amazing.

After polishing the frame and forks I fitted the headset. It appears to now have taken up residence on my kitchen table. I really need to cut back on bikes and parts to make some more space:

I have a few Sachs mechs around, these are some (not all) of them:

I decided that the Aris mech might suit this and I may well use the New Success for my Scapin, in lieu of not being able to find suitable Italian non-Campagnolo mechs to use. So this meant tracking down a bottom pull New Success front mech (easy) and a top pull Aris front mech (in no way easy). Eventually, I decided a top pull Quartz mech would do the job, so now I just need a band clamp for it:

More progress sometime next year, hopefully including getting the rear wheel built!

Re:

Have you been sitting at the table spending too much time drinking JD and staring at the frame?

Are you much of an authority on Sachs? I am looking at some wheels with Sachs Neos hubs (non disc). I think they were below new success but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info that I can find. Don't know if they're any good?

Haha, the JD was left after a party I think. I've been drinking rum and staring at the frame :D

Neos was the mid-range MTB groupset below Quarz but above Centera around 1996-7. I get the impresion it was closer to Quarz than Centera in terms of quality, but other people with more experience will hopefully chime in.

I have some lower-end, earlier Sachs hubs - 3000s I think - and they are really smooth, despite seemingly having done a lot of miles. I think hubs were one of the things Sachs did well, so I'd certainly expect the Neos ones to be good quality.

I have been periodically searching and found a few references to the MTB frames, but really not very many so far. There is one other member on here who managed to find one too, but hasn't built it up yet.

I've seen a couple of people on forums mention having Pongo build one for them or a family member, a suggestion that mine could be made of 531c, that I haven't followed up to see whether that's probable and someone saying that Pongo them he made a few mountain bikes for Tim Gould and David Baker, re-badged as Peugeots, which sounds odd as far as I remember it was Roberts who did that.

I'll keep looking when I remember and if I find any hard evidence I'll certainly share it. If oanyone has any leads for me they'd be gratefully received.
