* ACTUAL cost of bike build, not what you THOUGHT it cost! *

 i am aware, usually through looking on ebay, how much some of the parts on my bikes sell for, but i have never added them up on any of my bikes.

Some people are into that sort of thing, they add up everything, how much they spend on running a car for example, cant see the point my self.

Was looking for something to build up as a single speed pub bike. Something I wouldn't have to give a second thought about for the most part. Found a Brodie Bikes (not R&T) Catalyst local that was some guy's wife's bike at a decent deal. Steel Prestige frame. A good starting point.

After it was done to my satisfaction I looked at the black on black with black accents blinged out monster I'd built and thought to myself "I have no idea how much I spent, and really didn't want to. I do know there's no way in hell I'm locking it to a railing outside of a bar, that's for sure". Sure is fun, though. Kinda like riding a 24" BMX Cruiser.

Pro Tip: don't ride a rigid bike on rooted trails with an Evo. It won't end well.

But what price do you put on happiness

the voices in my head that try to justify the expense tell me .... the true value is found in the journey rather than the destination, or bottom-line on spreadsheet

the bank manager tells me differently

Spoke to a friend about this, he likes bikes however he is frugal sensible and good with money, his response was "I'd prefer a healthy bank balance than being broke with lots of bikes..."

Too much time on my hands recently- hence the SS for the current build (snippet below). It's even got conditional formatting   (I told you I had too much time on my hands!?!)

...looking at another £65 for the frame though

Ah I see that now. 65 for paint and decals is decent! :)
There's a powdercoaters near me that used to charge £40 a frame, paint rules supreme 'tho.

I'm looking into painting my first few, finally diving into full resto's after 10 years of riding beaters :) exciting times all round!

Re:

I do this with every bike :(

Due to indecision throughout the build I often end up buying multiple parts for the same bike, but I only carry the cost of the part used to the total. And of course I either store for later use or selling duplicated parts.

One of my latest builds was purchased as an almost complete bike - bought at £1500. However, after re-building it to the spec I want, and deducting the price for selling any of the original bits off, it's looking like the cost may be nearly double by the time I'm finished!  Admittedly it'll have some choice parts on it, and part of the cost was putting something right that I felt was the right thing to do for the build.
