A different kind of helmet thread

No not another do you/don't you wear one, should you/shouldn't you, why/why not thread.

I don't always wear a lid while riding, for example I don't bother when trundleing along the seafront with the kids (the kids do wear lids) but I will wear one when hacking round the woods.

So, my question... Is it just me or do other people get an odd sense of indestructabilty when putting on protective gear?, when you're out and wearing all the gear, helmet, full gloves and whatever else you wear you find yourself deliberately riding stuff/trying to jump over things that you just wouldn't try without all the gear on?

I think it's human nature to be that bit more brave/stupid if you're all armoured up.

And this will turn into the usual...no question. :)

I personally never wear one except for a roadrace and I havent done one of those for a few years. I insist that the kids wear one, but I cant stand them myself.

We do feel more indestructable, like when we're in those metal boxes driving up the motorway.

But then shaving your head makes you harder, you're noggin is more vulnerable so you've gotta be tough to protect it.

I reckon by page 2, this will be the usual debate! Lets hope otherwise though. One response already that could be read either way (not a dig at argonsixar, by the way!)

I only wear a lid and gloves. Not enough to get superhuman courage. The one time I did own all the gear (compulsory for a bike park I went to a couple of times - money well spent ) it still didnt make me feel indestructible. Despite my appearance, I am a bit of a wuss!

It's general well known and understood phenomenon - I think stemmed from research into advancements in car safety features (eg airbags, pretensioners, side-impact protection, all those sorts of things...)

There are some die-hard no-seat-belt-wearers that cite this rationale as their reasoning.

I don't think wearing a lid etc. has ever made me feel indestructible, I'm also a wuss, but I do think age has made me a lot more cautious.

Sometimes I wear one, sometimes not......

At the coast I never do, same will gently local rides, never going far or fast doesn't mean I'm safe, I know that.

Out on a faster ride or with groups, I always wear one, oh, and I always wear seatbelts!

But then shaving your head makes you harder

 I keep my hair at a grade 1 so maybe it's not the lid it's wether the kids are with me or not that makes my riding get silly

Note: If I let my hair grow it would look like sideshow Bob's hair <--- A la my avatar picture thingy
