98+ BoTM is back for August with a bit more of a relaxed theme: Any mtb is eligible, 98 to present, as long as it has not already been entered this year or previously won.

I hand painted the frame myself, you can see the components, it rips.

I love the look of this bike and enjoyed seeing the build process. I can’t imagine the time it must have taken to get that frame to look so cool.

I got the frame directly from Brooklyn Machine Works in Powers St in 2009 when I visited NYC for the first time right after graduating to spoil myself a bit. In the two or three years to follow I managed to get some first gen BMW components and other stuff which is super hard to find now, but then life happened and everything started to collect dust. Fast forward to 2024 when my fiancée picked up the idea to finally finish the build (guess she was annoyed of only the frame standing around in the flat). After countless nights and cigarette brakes spent on ebay, pinkbike, facebook, RetroBike...

In february of this year I bought a large 29er frame painted matte black, not knowing what it was. It looked on the large side but it was a rigid steel 29er which is what I was after



With advice from @Guinessisgoodforyou (Thanks bro') I started to take off the black paint with a knife and soon realized it was a Marin.



A bit of research and the help of @benjabbi and it appeared I had a 2008 singlespeed Marin Pine Mountain. In the following months I took most of the black paint off wet sanding. The details were harder to do with sand paper so I used...
