I am in two minds as to what to do, try and restore or sell to someone with more time and enthusiasm for a project like this! Open to suggestions

Split in and sell off the usable bits.......in the nicest possible way, it doesnt look like it'd be worth throwing loads of money at.

Sorry, buts that what I'd do

That's pretty much what i was thinking. I'll probably just take off the dia compre 987/ss7's and the forks and can the rest. Although my Mum does like it, so maybe she can just keep it! :D

Keep the forks, brakes/levers, thumbies, mechs and chainset.

Chuck the rest

lava dome

sweet kona mate, i was watching this on ebay myself, curious to see how much it went for. mine was pretty much identical when i bought it in '96 (i think). After having the chainstay dropout welded (i wasn't the most sensible of youths), am trying to decide whether i'll re-spray it the original colour... since i've started hoarding red bits, think i will stick to the green, i do love it so...

got a nice selection of lx/xt/dx to go on it. i'm wanting some nice cranks & wheels to finish it off though. you keeping yours as it is then?

If I decide to break the Saracen up I'll be in touch with mattbrown re the Forks. :)

The Kona will stay largely the same, I'm going to be using it as a commuter so it will get a good service, new BB, possibly cranks as it will be easier than finding rings, chain, cassette etc. The front wheel is a horrible machine made replacement, so I've found a retro blue and silver hope to replace it. I might get some wider flat bars as well as the have been cut down to the point where i can hardly use the thumbies! :) I'll be keeping it simple though because I am supposed to be riding this to save wear and tear on my Ellsworth Epiphany (not the most sensible commuter! ). My mate actually got the bike off Ebay for £146, but didn't do anything with it and sold it to me for a ton. :D

Nice Kona there, always been a fan

Just picked up a '94 Fire mountain myself for commuting...will have to post some pics when it's finished (hopefully this weekend).

don't shout at me - started this thread before the split!

Just thought I'd stick an updated pic of the Kona now it has a new set of wheels (silver Hope Ti Glides, sun CR18 and Panaracer Panasella) and drivechain (all LX 7speed). Didn't want to go modern on the cranks, but couldn't get hold of the chainrings I needed quickly, (being used as a commuter to save wear and tear on the Ellsworth) so needs must. Will try and get the originals back on if possible. :D

Well, that didn't really work. Here are some pictures as she stands now. I know quite a few people will object to the bars, but what can I say, I'm a big bloke and like wide risers, so there. :) In all seriousness, I ride the bike to work on a daily basis and simply found the straight bars too low and uncomfortable, plus I don't like the look of stems with lots of rise- worse than riser bars IMHO. ;)

Anyway, spec is now something like this:

Frame: 1994 Kona Lava Dome 19"

Fork: Project Two double butted

Headset: Impact (original and still buttery smooth)
Stem: Syncros
Handlebar: Easton Monkey Lite
Grips: Race Face good and Evil
Barends: N/A

Brakes: Shimano XTR M951
Brake Pads: XTR
Brake Cables: Shimano
Cantilever cable hangers: N/A
Brake Levers: Shimano XTR M951

Shifters: Shimano Deore thumbies
Front Derailleur: Shimano STX RC
Rear Derailleur: Shimano XTR M953
Derailleur Cables: Shimano
Cassette: Shimano XT 8 speed
Chain: SRAM PC870
Cranks: Race Face Turbine - Pewter
Crank Bolts: Shimano
Chainrings: Middleburn - Green
Chainring bolts: ?
Bottom Bracket: Shimano UN54
Pedals: Modern Shimano M540 (not retro!)

Hub Skewers: unbranded security jobs
Rims: Sun CR-18
Hubs: Hope Ti-Glide Silver
Nipples: ?
Spokes: ?
Tyres: Panaracer Panasella
Tubes: not sure - from Dr S?

Saddle: Selle Italia Flite Transalp
Seatpost: Bontrager
Seatpost Binder: Kona

Weight: No idea, about 22/23 lbs?

The frame is tatty in places, but I have to remember it is just my commuter! The only thing I would now change is the front mech for an XTR one, but they seem to be hens teeth in bottom pull and the STX matches the colour of the cranks, so I might leave it. :)

Hope you like it despite the odd modern part!
