Started of at £50 BIN. I mentioned to seller that it is presumably steel, not aluminium and he sent me one back insisting it's alloy. I apologised for interfering with his auction, told him it could be collectable and he's put the BIN up. Still alloy though.

It is an Alloy.

Steel is an alloy in itself (an alloy of Iron and Carbon). But most bicycle frames are an alloy of steel chromium-molybdenum (Cro-Mo), so he is right in calling it an alloy, and it is certainly lightweught compared to other steel alloys.

What you are thinking of is Aluminium, or Alu. You can also have "Aluminium Alloy" ***

All Alloy means is a "blend" of materials.

***
# 6000 series are alloyed with magnesium and silicon, are easy to machine, and can be precipitation hardened, but not to the high strengths that 2000, and 7000 can reach.
# 7000 series are alloyed with zinc, and can be precipitation hardened to the highest strengths of any aluminium alloy.

Sorry, I meant aluminium, just typing fast. In his ad he calls it a lightweight alloy frame and means aluminium. As in not steel. I have his reply confirming it.
And I think in common usage alloy is used as aluminium. Most people reading the ad would assume that's what it means.

Yeah, and that bugs me to hell, i correct people all the time. Alu is a metal element, Alloy is a term to mean "mixed" or not pure. Completely different meanings that just happen to sound similar, I don't use words just because that's their common meaning, tis hw we al nd spkn txt innit

Isn't the shortened form of aluminium ally (spelled phonetically, possibly incorrectly) ??

No no no no no

The word "Ally" doesn't exist, it's just a scally term innit.

Aluminium is an element which is far too soft to use on it's own. So bicycles generally use 6000 and 7000 series Aluminium Alloys***

Bicycle frames are made from "Aluminium Alloy" or "Steel Alloy" and Carbon, Titanium etc etc

Aluminium - Alu
Steel - Steel (Chemical composition varies vastly depending on the specific alloy)
Titanium - Ti

If I ever had the opportunity to throw a word into room 101 it would be ALLY!!!

Do lots of people hate you?

Sympathy on the text speak though. I still use proper words, capitals, punctuation etc. Sad.
