Finished this yesterday, still experimenting with tire choices but all in all I'm now happy with it.
I bought the 21" frame (yeah, I know, it's a bigun) on eBay last year with the intention of donning my complete XT1 (4 finger levers, U-brake, barrel shifters, wide pros) groupset upon its sorry carcass. Those in the know will tell me that this was the base Stumpy in the 88 range and originally shipped with Deore components. Interestingly the bike when new was identical in every way but name to the Rockhopper Comp of the same year, which I also own. The paint isn't great but good enough to warrant leaving, I didn't fancy my chances on replicating those decals.
Anyway, just got the final pieces I needed (seat & XT Pedals) & I guess I can now claim that if not model correct, she is 'period' correct. Only issue I had was having to use a NOS Deore Hyperglide block due to almost total non-availability of original 6sp Uniglide, however, even the 88 XT shifters have a 7th click, happy days.
I rode her yesterday and I even moved the seat an inch further forward than I usually ride to exaggerate that tall 'grandad' position. If I were honest I'd say the bike is slightly too tall for me (I'm 5" 11) but this isn't going to see many bombholes, more of a sunday stroll with the kids zzzzzz, yeah, I know.
