56 days in prison for racist tweets?

... frankly i want bigger prisons with more people in them, and i don't care if there's 5 to a cell that they're stuck in for 23 hours a day with nothing but the bricks on the wall to count.

sorry if you think that is harsh, it's my opinion and it's one that is not up for debate with me.

if you don't want to go to prison/get fined etc don't do something illegal/wrong/offensive/violent and if you do and you get caught don't expect any sympathy from me.

my 2p

Really? Let's debate, shall we?

If you were to have a child that's terminally ill and will only suffer more and more because the law doesn't allow euthanasia on minors, would you let it suffer or would you break the law?
Does that mean you deserve to be in a cell with 4 criminals just because you couldn't bear to see your child suffer?

Don't count on the judge dismissing the case. Murder has a fixed minimum sentence, and if the crime is proven, the judge has to sentence you.

True, it's an extreme case, but I'm pretty sure that there are dozens of people in jail who merely broke the law because the law was morally wrong.

there's a guy at work who argues like this, the 'what if' argument.

there is always a 'what if' and most of the time it is an 'extreme' argument , usually so much so that it does negate any previous comments but the 'what if' argument is a poor strategy in my opinion.

personally i do want harder sentences, that's my opinion, i think it is a shame that more people don't get sent to prison for their illegal activities and i think it should be an awful place. it's wrong that some people don't get jail sentences purely through lack of space in our prisons.

this guy was a drunken knob pure and simple, i doubt he'll do it again though.

I think you have summed it up pretty well.

We really do all make daft mistakes now and then.

Things like Twitter and the like unfortunately cause those mistakes to linger.

I have been caught out myself a few times getting pissed and losing my sense of perspective.

Much better when you are with the person you insult so you can sort it out.

There is room yet on that land. I hope they never build there.

HF whilst I agree with most of what you said this is the most ridiculous statement ever...

I think it is generally ridiculous to hold people to account for their behaviour whilst drunk.

Most of the violence in this country spawns from people being drunk, weekend A&E visits in any city is proof of that, it usually starts with a bit of innocent drunken slagging.
Drunk drivers are responsible for many accidents and deaths. Let them off because they don't know when to stop drinking? Get real, the drink wasn't forced down their necks, they made a choice and if the end result is breaking the law they should be punished accordingly.

Totally different matter that the law can put you on a sex offenders list for mooning.

For what it is worth, I think it is generally ridiculous to hold people to account for their behaviour whilst drunk. People are being added to the sex offenders register for mooning for goodness sake!

Where the behaviour is criminal, and has a victim who can be shown to have suffered, that is a different matter.

The way I put it was clunky, but in context it was not really what you have taken it as. I meant when people remind you of what you said about your boss while you were drunk, that kind of thing.

I am totally in agreement about drink driving, etc. Drink really is behind the majority of deaths in this land.

Well English is not my forte, being a Scot brought up partially in the USA.

The first date I took my wife on was in a Chinese restaurant in London.

We sat next to the window.

Twice in the two hours we were there males came and showed their backsides to us.

We were flummoxed.

As we left, I noted it was Moon's Chinese Restaurant.

I don't reckon those young chaps deserved to have their lives tainted because they had a sense of humour after a few bevies late on a Friday.

:)

Hell I don't need a drink before I start mooning people, but I don't deserve to be on a list either - if you don't want to see it, shut your eyes, especially when I'm letting the cat out at 6 in the morning.

It can be difficult to moon without showing your balls. And no one wants to see that whilst they're eating.

That really depends on whether your menu choices have already been fixed. Seeing a pair of those swinging may well inspire me to try the pork balls.
