as per title - I think it can be done - but think there are brake issues :?

Old style calipers fit but more recent "close fit" ones don't ??????

Just taken some 27"s off a bike and the 700c's seem to be ok - am I missing summat :?:

Might be lucky on the brakes - 27" are a bit larger (630 vs 622 in modern speak) so you need brakes that can allow the pads to sit that bit lower.

It's exactly that - depending on the height of the brake fitting on the frame and the exact calliper design, sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't.

Generally the problems occur when fitting a modern close-clearance calliper to an old, unmodified frame.

Excellent thanks for that - Looks like i can use nice campag 700s on the recently acquired Flying Scot then :D

So if I want to change calipers as well I'd have to use a drop bolt or similar...... :?:

If you want to change callipers then it's a suck it and see - you might get away with just filing the bottom of the slot in the arm to steal another mm.

Probably the neatest solution is the R600 long drop Shimano calliper. It's a non-series component but a knowledgeable shop will know about them. In the old days they were called RX100 deep drop callipers and went on being available for years after RX100 was withdrawn.
