Another project that got out of hand! Born from a growing dissatisfaction of the available bikes for kids (weight, size of components, etc), I decided to build a MTB for my 8 year old son. The only bikes that I liked were Islabikes and Opus, but both were difficult to get shipped to Holland. In fact looking here on the forum for a project for myself, I came across this very nice 1999 GT Avalanche frame in 14".
Here are the specs:
Frame: 1999 GT Avalanche 14"
Fork: 1999 Rockshox SID SL (80mm)
Headset: CK
Stem: Ritchey Trail
Handlebar: Ritchey riser comp
Grips: ODI Vans
Brakes: Magura HS33 (with fantastic reach adjust!!)
Shifters: Shimano XT
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Zee
Cassette: Shimano Zee 11-36 (10sp)
Chain: KMC X10.93
Cranks: Sram S600 shortened to 140mm
Chainrings: Raceface narrow-wide 30t
Bottom Bracket: Shimano UN-55
Pedals: Animal Hamilton BMX
Hub Skewers: Halo Hex
Rims: Mavic SUP Ceramic
Hubs: Middleburn
Tyres: Vredestein T-Lope superlite 26x2.00
Tubes: Schwalbe XXlight
Saddle: Answer Alienation
Seatpost: Ritchey comp
Weight: 9.5kg (on my crude suitcase hanger balance)
My son is very satisfied with his new bike "with the big wheels" and fits perfectly!
