1998 Sunn Exact bare metal build

This is something I’m going to be building up over the next few weeks or so. I bought it as a complete bike which needed attention, but ended up taking the XTR parts off it for another build. The frame had been powder coated yellow by the previous owner. I did assemble it with some Deore LX parts and try and sell it but not much interest in the complete bike, several enquiries about just the frame though.
I eventually decided to break it down (LX parts went on my Cannondale M800), I ordered new decals from Gil and will be stripping it to bare metal and repainting or powder coating in the correct white.
Will then build it back up with some decent components on it and see how it rides, should be decent as it’s properly light.

Cleaned the frame down, last few bits will come off with a dremel and some wet and dry. Hopefully get this off to the powdercoaters in the next week or two.

Nice one - I remember you were selling it. Good move in getting it back to the original look and decals !

Thanks, yeah I’m really impressed with the quality of the frame having stripped it right back to bare metal. The welds are so neat and the Ritchey dropouts are stunning.
Dropped it at the powdercoaters yesterday.

Nice nice nice. This is something I need to as well. Mine was white with somewhat damaged blue bubble sticker. Really regret removing that sticker and painting the frame puke green *doh*!! Looks like it has taken some time getting the yellow paint of. Any tips?

100% agree, standard white is the way forward. Mine was powder coated in yellow and the company I took it to said that they would struggle to get the coating off with sand blasting. I googled it and best method for removing powder coat seems to be a strong gasket remover aerosol, spray on, leave to soak for 10 mins and then scrape off the powder coat (it bubbles up and goes flexible). I used a piece of flat copper (softer than steel) to scrape so I didn’t scratch the bare metal.
It was very time consuming and fiddly in places. I washed the frame off with muc-off cleaner when done to get rid of residue.
If yours is painted rather than powder coat the above should still work, but then again - sand blasting would work on paint so that might be best for you.
Gil M sorted me for new decals - that guy is a bit of a legend!

Back from powdercoaters

Picked up the frame from Full Range in Letchworth Garden City today, absolutely stunning job on the finish - wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these boys.
Got the decals on this evening, it’s looking *mint*, I’m so gassed to start building this up now, got lots of the bits already so this should progress pretty rapidly now.
