Although I continue to tinker on a few bikes during the non-rider-friendly winter, my appetite for building something up from the frame hasn't been satisfied, despite a few options clamouring for attention.
I obtained this frame from a young chap in Melbourne who was looking to swap it for something he could convert into a gravel bike. I made contact and suggested that he sell the frame and use the cash toward his new project, rather than holding out for a direct swap. After a couple of weeks he came back to me and agreed. The frame is certainly not a unicorn, but I was interested in Kona's billing of it as 'ready to race' -- and this example seemed OK, with a few battle scars showing an active life.
While I think about how to deal with that scar on the top tube, I'll give the frame a good cut & polish -- as you can see, the finish is a little tired, but that dark purple should come up nicely with some TLC.
My initial thoughts were to make it fully rigid, with a P2 I have stashed away, and 1x, mostly due to my ineptitude with front derailleurs but also for simplicity and lightness. As ever, the intention was to achieve the build with parts I already have in the spares pile, but this time I planned it a little beforehand just to make sure there wasn't an expensive trap waiting for me when the build was under way.
Here's that fork: it's a later one, not sure from what model but it has a disk brake mount which I won't need. Steerer is long enough which is the main criterion right now.
Next steps: headset and BB.
