1993 Trek 8300 build

A lot of hard work, but the results certainly look worth it

Would be better in the Readers bikes section, if you ask a mod to move it for you I am sure they will.

Thanks @mk one.
Not sure how to contact mods directly, but if any read this, please could you move this thread to the correct section. Thank you

Done ✅

Finally got around to moving forward a bit with my build.
I sourced a Selle Italia Flight saddle, date stamped '93, so perfect for my 1993 bike.

I restored it using the London Leather Company products and I'm pretty pleased with the results. (I've since done a resto on a pair of trainers and now wish I'd used their filler in a couple of sports)

I mounted the seat to a Trek System 2 seatpost that I polished.
I've also fitted the BB, polished and fitted the Suntour XC Expert crankset and added the XC Pro GG pedals, Tioga Alchemy Headset, Pace RC35 Forks, and System 2 Bar and Stem.

I modified the 8 speed Suntour MD cassette by removing one cog so that it fits on my 7 Speed hub.

I had a go at trying to fit the XC Pro self-energising brakes but soon realised I will actually have to read the instructions if I'm going to get them to work properly.

I have bought and am now awaiting arrival of a NOS Suntour XC Pro MD rear derailleur, as my plan to restore the one I have, got the better of me.

I have also bodged together a seatpost clamp using a Suntour quick release bolt, an unknown alloy clamp, some washers and a Dia Compe cable hanger - having mailed loads of sellers of Trek frames and put up a Wanted ad here and thus far having no luck, I am yet to find the elusive correct Trek clamp so this will have to do for now... the hunt goes on.

I do like this era of old Treks, looks like it's coming along nicely :)

How does the cable route for the front mech? Do you need a top push doohickey adaptor thing and have you got one?🫣

Thanks @Once A Hero
Fortunately the 8300 had a top swing front derailleur and it's routed conventionally (see pic)

.. although you did make me so panic slightly, and I had to do a double-take and check for myself!

Ah good, so you can use a straight forward top pull mech 👍
Oh the irony...
I went to fit the front mech today, getting as far as clamping it on and running the cable, only to realise a mistake... It's a bottom pull mech.
I had someone bring it for me from the USA as the seller didn't post to the UK and I stashed it away and forgot about it ages ago. At the time, I'd asked the seller to confirm it was Top Pull and they assured me it was..
I'm gutted I've only just spotted it now🤦‍♂️

(The hunt goes on for a 35mm clamp size, Suntour XC Comp / Pro Top-Pull mech)
