1993 Trek 8300 build

Retro Guru
Having dabbled in a few part-restorations and fixing up a few pub bikes, I'm finally doing my first bare frame build.
I've picked the brains of many on here who have provided invaluable advice before starting this project, so thank you..I may well need more Retrobike knowledge on my journey!
I bought a Trek 8300 from here a while ago and have started to make progress. It's a '93 (only year it was made, I believe)
The bike originally came specced with the Suntour Expert groupset but I fancied a slight upgrade. I'm going for XC Pro but haven't managed to source all the bits so, for the moment, I'll proceed with mostly XC pro and a few XC comp bits until (if I ever!) find what I need.

I started the build by checking the carbon tubes as best as could with a camera and no cracks. Phew!
Instead of the flouro or purple route of 8700 and 8900's I wanted to polish the frame. It was my first attempt at polishing aluminium, and I won't be doing it again in a hurry!
Having taped off the carbon tubing, I went about stripping the grey paint from the headtube, rearstays, and bb area etc. I mainly used 250, 400, 800, 1200 and then 2500 wet and dry paper and used a dremel in the harder to reach places, finishing again by hand. The primer on these frames was no joke and took some serious elbow grease to shift.
It's not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with the result for now.

I may go over a couple of areas again, but it's taken too many man-hours and I need to move on!
I bought some fairly clean, part ceramic Matrix rims and had them laced to NOS Suntour Greaseguard hubs by Francis Thurmer, who did a fine job.

I bought a Tioga Alchemy headset from fleabay and tried to fit it last night, only to find that the seller has sent the wrong lower race.. leaving the bearings exposed. The hunt for another headset (or correct race is on)
The BB is currently the only thing that isn't period correct as I couldn't find a 115mm Axle for my GG bottom bracket. So, for now, a 115mm Shimano UN55 is fitted. I'm also hunting for a System 1/2 seat clamp that allows me to fit the rear canti aligner (which I have).

Thanks @moonlite. The rest of the spec that I have gathered for the moment is:

Forks - Pace RC35 forks (serviced and shown some love from the Pace wizard @justbackdated)
Handlebars - System 2
Stem - System 2
Headset - Tioga Alchemy (subject to change)
Brakes - Suntour XC Pro cantilever
Brake levers - Suntour XC Pro
Shifters - Suntour XC Pro thumbies
Crankset - Suntour XC Expert (at the mo)
Pedals - Suntour XC Pro GG
FD - Suntour XC Comp MD (35mm, top pull Pro was impossible to find!)
RD - Suntour XC Pro (part refurbished... may need one in better condition)
Cassette - Suntour 7 speed Micro Drive (converted from 8 spd)
Wheels - Matrix laced to Suntour XC Pro Greaseguard Hubs
Seatpost - System 2, polished
Seat - Selle Italia Flight (date stamped '93)

Think that's about it. As I mentioned before, I'm still missing a seat clamp and need to sort out the headset situation so I can crack on with getting the forks on.

Can’t believe I’ve only just found this thread

Mine was in far rougher state but even so I know how much effort went into cleaning and polishing the metal especially around the joints, and I took the easy option rather embarking on the long sparkly metal journey and painted mine

Looks ace naked and really like your group set choice

So I'm sensing a Suntour preference here? Nice stuff!

Also fan of Suntour stuff, especially XC Pro.

Yes, the joints are tricky as it's so hard to get the sandpaper into the grooves to make it work. I had to wrap it around various implements, like screwdriver heads for some bits!
