1989 Klein Kirsten

This arrived yesterday from Bulgaria, I saw it on eBay and thought it would be nice for my wife and daughter, any excuse! I threw a bid on in the dying seconds and was the only bidder, 5 days later and it's here.

Over all pretty good condition, lovely DA headset and bb is smooth with no play. Colour is called Shimmering Burgundy and the year is 1989, not 91/2 in Candy Red as I incorrectly originally thought. The frame has some great details like the shaped cable guides on the top tube and the gusset behind the bb. It came with matching forks also in great condition. Once it's had a clean and polish it will look pretty tidy I think.

I got straight on to collecting parts, 105 from same time, and nearly have the set, few more parts to gather and I will ready to start another build. Now, all the 105 parts are from 91/2 as that was what I thought I needed initially going on the 92 catalogue, now I know it's actually an 89 the spec should be something else. Entry set was Ultegra, but I'm sticking with the later 105 as I have it all nearly and a couple of parts are NOS, can always change later if I feel I really need to!

Congrats. Quite rare I think... I have never seen one besides in the Klein sales material. Gonna be nice to follow the build

I'm possibly out on the date here, having looked on Google and the early catalogues this might be an 89 model, in Shimmering Burgundy, the Kirsten decal on the top tube is near the seat tube as per 89 catalogue not like 92. The decals are laid on top of the paint then clear coat over that, they are not debossed like later Klein lettering.

If anyone knows or can add to this please do, thanks.

The decals looks very much like on my Klein Quantum Z. They are on top of the paint (without clearcoat on top... which to my knowledge is much a Quantum Z). So I would not put so much emphasis on the kinds of decals.

I like the pic of the top of the rearframe/brake bridge... Nice craftmanship on such a small frame. Must have been a tough one to weld on that brake bridge

Little update, parts are coming through nicely keeping the postie busy!, a NOS crank, new chain, brakes and levers, a 3ttt stem all in very good condition. I have a NOS 105 FM and a new Shimano braze-on adaptor clamp coming, a used RM with a pair of 105 hubbed wheels with Mavic Open 4CD rims and some 3ttt Forma bars, so getting there.

How long is the stem? You don't want to long a reach, unless your wife/daughter has mega long arms !!!

As for the decals, I have 3 91/92 Attitudes between me and my girlfriend and none of them are embossed

As for the groupset, I went through this with my frame, from early 600 to 6400 series and now I am running 7700 DA with Mavic Kyserium Elites !!! The evolution of a bike, it can always go back to its earlier style

If only the guys who are organising the Klein meet realised that there is more than just mountain bikes, we would bring a Sunburst !!!
