1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

All good stuff from Oakey Dokey...
As for clear powder coat over powder coat. I’ve only ever had it done with clear powder over fluorescent. For straight colours I haven’t bothered. As for clear coat paint over graphics on powder coat, I’ve never bothered as it’s a false economy (IMO) much cheaper and more practical to get the graphics made with a laminated layer of polycarbonate. If they get knocked off, order some more. (From Gil_m on here) clear paint only works as a skin or a wrap for want of a better description over powder coat, so if breached, moisture gets in between and goes nasty.

Great stuff guys thanks!

Well I've had the BB removed:

LBS did it for free! Top lads!
Here's what they handed me in a bag:

Looks ruff? Cleaned up lovely!

The cable guide rivet chewed up the label on the BB body, if you look closely at the pic above you can see the circular impression of the end of the rivet:

Going to need a new cable guide:

Noted the rust on the frame:

I noticed the original paint seems fairly soft, the cable guide had bitten into it under the pressure of a rivet.

Is anyone able to get any information out of the frame number 917289?

Frame is going to the finishers tomorrow, I'll have a wait of about 3 weeks, so that should give me time to gather most of what I need in terms of parts.

Cheers!

Dave

That bottom bracket shell area is quite minty. That bottom bracket that has been removed looks in top nick and is totally worth screwing right back in and the original square taper crank cleaned and re-used. If the chainrings are worn out with hooked/damaged teeth etc they can be replaced easily. They look like 110mm/74mm BCD cranks and there are many chainring options, in those sizes, from super cheap to super expensive available new,or used.

Morning Dave, I’ve been collecting Falcon CB numbers for a while now and tbh there’s not much to say. Everything that Falcon made during this period (Falcon, Holdsworth, Claud & I think Dawes) got lumped together. Not all got a stamp. Most got a printed & laminated foil sticker. Later on in the 90’s more frames appeared with stamped numbers, but these were always on the models that had been manufactured by others and shipped in like the aluminium frames from the Far East.
Your frame is a design that started being produced in Brigg from the latter half of 1988 to 1996 with only a few minor tweaks along the way. The colour and graphic combo dates it specifically from a production window of Nov 1988 - November 1989. It was then switched to white with new style graphics ready for Christmas 1989.

Thanks chaps.

No noises or graunching from the BB , feels slow to turn by hand but I guess that's the missing leverage from the cranks?

I bought this bike in April 1990. It was sold as new but was clearly the previous year model.

Looking at drop bars it's all a bit of a ball ache, maybe a fast roadster style would be more straightforward?

Either way with the Pagan stripped to component form I've been busy with the scales:

For reference.

Frame: 2.891 kg
Forks: 1.072 kg
F Wheel complete: 1.927 kg
R Wheel complete: 2.353 kg
Chainwheel/cranks/pedals: 1.502 kg
Bar/stem/shifters/levers/bar ends: 1.587kg
Seatpost & saddle: 708 g
BB UN55: 340 g
Brakes (Canti): 430 g
F derailleur: 141.2 g
R derailleur: 332.2 g
Headset: 145.5 g

Total: 13.43 kg (29.61 lb)

Cheers!

Well a set of drops is going to be bit more of a ball ache than regular mtb or touring bars is what I meant.

A flipped set of Pashley bars for example:

Shifters, stems, brake levers etc.

Less straightforward with more parts to be bought and ultimately fiddling around to get a shifter, cassette, brake, wheel combo that works.

Or plug n play a "regular" bar?

Cheers

Yep chromed steel, from a 2010 Pashley Courier.

24.5 inches wide with 1.5 inch rise and sweep, just flipped over. That courier stem is too short and the original Claud specced Kalloy AL222 is too long.

Righto chaps. Time for some wheel/spacing/gearing/cassette questions.

I have the Rigida Rally 30s which have been on this bike for about 20 years. The rear is 130mm spacing and wears a 6 speed Shimano freehub. The bike has been left out in all weathers so the wheels look like this:

20210602_124650.jpg

20210602_124723.jpg

20210602_124753.jpg

I've been through the shed and robbed these off my sons' abandoned 2015 Giant Escape 2:

20210602_124547.jpg

20210602_124603.jpg
20210602_124819.jpg

These are basic Giant GX02s but have only had couple of hundred miles use. Running an 8 speed cassette, I think.

The Giants are 19mm and the Rigidas are 23mm
The Giants are 135mm OLD whereas the frame and Rigidas are 130mm.

The pair of Rigidas' weigh: 4.848kg, the Giants' less at 4.188 kg a saving of 660 g.The Giants' being narrower, I should also get a rounder profile out of the same width tyres.

So my issues:

1: Cold setting the frame to get the 5 mm for the 135 OLD rear wheels. (Did front wheel OLDs change when rears did? Front wheel doesnt quite fit in the fork either?)

2: Finding suitable chainset (nick the 8 speed derailleur, cranks and chainwheels off the Giant Escape? Its Acera/Suntour XCE)

20210602_180016.jpg
3. Can I upgrade to more gears in order to get lower gearing? New rings and cassette? Shifters and chain I need to obtain regardless so 9/10 speed if doable wont add extra cost there. Or should I stay with 8 spd and add those components at a higher quality?

Looking for thoughts, warnings and ideas please?

Cheers

Dave
