Really nice bike! From the Araya catalogue it looks to have characteristics of two of the 83-85 models, one has the half chromed forks, the other the one piece handlebar/stem combo. A key difference appears to be the size of the largest chainring. If you can read Japanese it will be easier to work out :!:

Definately a bit of both isnt it, the MB-MF26DX only has one set of bottle bosses like mine and the alternative colour seems right, cant see the tubing decal but could be behind the cranks, it also has the diacompe cantilevers and same grips..... the MF26-4 seems to have the same tubing decal though, same bullmoose and similar chainset :| .
wish I could read japanese, just tried a smartphone app but :roll: , wonder if mudguards were in the optional extras
Tyres are non original and shot so in time I'll change them to a pair of amberwalls

You could try e-mailing the Japanese course at Manchester University, they love this stuff practical real life stuff for the students to practice on

Really like the idea of university students translating mid-80s bike catalogues

This lovely bike has reminded me of something I saw many years ago: a bag that fits in the space of the bar-stem triangle. And it looks like people still make 'em: https://global.bluelug.com/fairweather-ongr-bag.html.
It's also got me wondering about getting a set of those bars myself (happily Planet X sell a Nitto version for £60+). Which then made me think that a planned rebuild of my 1988 Muddy Fox Roadrunner might not be a straightforward restoration but more a homage to the early Foxes and even earlier clunkers with plain white paint, small Muddy Fox 'jam jar' decals, triangle bar/stem and sprung leather saddle...
