1 x 10 Drive train on Retrobike.

Another thing not mentioned is that for the price of a 12 speed cassette I can fully replace my 3x7 drivetrain. All to end up with similar range and top/bottom gear ratios.

Trebz, merry christmas and how is the 10x plan going.

LGF, how doe the old 7/8sp jockies behave with the 10speed chain, I've had some not like 9sp before as they where a bit too wide in the teeth when new.

I'm building one, but with SRAM Gripshift (enter some letters here for model number) full length jobbies.

Do you recommend the narrow/wide front rings, I'm used to good old steel single full lenght teeth rings. (for my similar but 9speed version)
I know 10 speed is old hat now, hence why I can move to it as it's cheaper :)
I'm not after 50T rear cogs, just 34 or so will do me.

I've had to push rear cassette out to 49T & mod rear mech cage on modern 1x11 bike to get same hill climbing as an old 3x8 can achieve. The modern one can fly through the changes though, simpler & quicker. I do spin out downhill if I use it on-road though!

Here's mine - 1995 Parkpre pro elite with a modernish reba fork, 1x10 gears with a mix of xt and deore. Chainset is an XT M750 square taper, painted black to match. More modern hope hubs (pro 2, I think). chainring is a 32t NW, cassette is 12-36. Don't need anything lower than that, it I do it's faster to get off and walk. Setting up takes a little longer, and I'm not completely happy with the chainline (big-big makes a bit of noise), but I like it.

Given my bike has a 48(46)-11 (24-28(30/32) top and low gear setup, then any single up front will be hard pushed, my 1x9 has a 42 up front iirc, but it is to ab 11-28 cassette iirc. Great for commuting, bugger if there is a hill or slow off-road.

To me a 1x10 is for slow flattish off-road bimbles, not a mixed bag off commute to the off-road.
Be great around Sherwood pines for example.

Standard original jockey wheels are fine
