i think that spring your referring to is part of the canti brakes so like what Splatter just remove the spring together with the base to reveal the brake post since that's where you will insert the vees as well
well according to bikepro.com the suntour xc pro grease guard BB has a spindle length of 125.5mm

yes, the old shimano cranksets of the 80s to 90s (XT M730, DX MT60, LX M550/250/300/350/400/450/500) require BBs with long axles as can be seen in this table:

how much did the bearings cost? do you have the part number? i live overseas so i need the part number to check with the local bearing specialist
also, where can i get the axle? i need a smaller length around 110 to 117mm i find the stock axle that came with my s19 '92 Procaliber a tad too...
