110bcd cranks with compact drive front derailleur?

I just ordered a set of 110bcd cranks with 48/36/24 rings and was wondering if my front mech (M738?) is capable of handling it by just altering the position slightly or if i need to replace it with a standard drive unit. Another option would be downsizing to like a 44/34/24 setup on that crank which i believe would be fine? Just looking for some input on this. Thanks!

You could use that f mech with an ATB chainset but the shifting won't be very good as f mechs are curved to fit the appropriate ring sizes. This means you'd have to raise the f mech so that the rear clears the chainring.

If, as you say, you fit a 44/34/24 then shifting will probably be fine.

The other alternative is to get an older f mech and keep your 48/36/24 rings. This is what I'd do, as a f mech will probably be cheaper than buying 2 chainrings.

i'd opt for this also

A lot also depends on your seat tube angle. If you have a very slack seat tube the mech may have to sit higher to avoid touching the chainring at the back.

So far in my experience they are interchangeable between ATB and CD ring sizes - I even run a Campag road front on a 42/29 Middleburn Duo with excellent results.
Likewise I have used an M738 on a 48T on the tandem.
