Zaskar LE - '93 Edition - Build thread

I also think these are Marin Lite brakes.

I've had four or five frames powder coated so far, but only steel ones. Aluminium is definitely not a problem, though. The coater I always go to works for several bike manufacturers and always has aluminium frames hanging there.

It's important to tape up all the bearing seats and mounting points well, then you won't have any problems. However, the coater should do this carefully. You can also tape up the frame number; with aluminium, this isn't a problem if it's not coated afterwards.

The powder coater I go to does the decals as well, as you need special heat-resistant films if you want them under clear coat. This costs a little extra, but it looks great and is incredibly robust.

A complete frame with pre-treatment, paint, decals and clear lacquer costs around €250. At a paint shop, you pay at least three times as much, as it involves much more work.

I think it would look really sick with that yellow and black parts 🤔

Awesome story so far!

I’ve never paid more than £80 for a frame to be powder coated. And that’s to a very high standard.

The issue with decals is that nobody produces the correct decals that work with powder - heat.

As I have said, he does complete paint removal, blasting or chemical, zink phosphate primer, color, decals produced in house, and clear coat. It may have been 220€ (~190£), it was some years ago 😬
I think that is not to expensive considering the work that goes into reproducing decals alone.
And yes he makes them for powder coating and they look awesome.

It can of course be cheaper if you don't need all of the work mentioned above. I have also paid 30-50€ for a frame and it is still a flawless work and really robust.

"Two layers

The frames, which are usually made of aluminium, are typically glass bead blasted in a first step. The few steel frames are treated with zinc primer. The coloured polyester powder coating is then applied to the bare aluminium. The powder particles, which are applied electrostatically with a spray gun, adhere to the earthed part. The coating is then cured in an oven at just under 200 degrees. Once the part has cooled down, the coating is immediately ready for use. Single-layer coatings are the exception. Usually, stickers are placed on the hardened base coat, which are either supplied by the manufacturers or produced and plotted in-house using digital printing. This is followed by a layer of powder clear coat, either matt or glossy, depending on the customer's requirements. Between 90 and 140 micrometres of paint adhere to the frame at the end."

Still not sure on frame finish other than I will NOT be polishing it.

Paint or powder coating I am expecting to pay $600.xx plus CDN

But if I do go paint/powder it will for sure be the GT yellow.

As for decals, yeah I am expecting more than a hundred Canadian for quality.... would love to find some vector graphic files that I could get my local decal guy to print... but it is what it is.

I guess

I guess its not too bad if the decals are designed and fitted inclusive. However I'd go down the wet paint , or airbrushed route at that price point.

Everyone knows I love a Zaskar. But... I'd never spend anywhere near that having one painted, let alone in a colour which it didn't come in (yellow was 97)

Zaskars are extremely common , you'd be better using that cash to buy a frame which is original paint, or anodised.

I haven't found somebody that does a descent wet paint job for 250€ 😔
To find such person would be awesome!

My own attempts in painting were "meh..." at best.
