Am I being stupid or is there no better way to do this? The stem is really short on this Lava Dome and I don't see a better way to route the cables onto the top tube...

Those outer 2 need to stay the same side of the head tube because the stops are so close.

That bend in the ferrules will lead to poor shifting, as well as looking awful.

This is what it looked like before. Its either a 90 degree bend to reach the stops with a short cable or have all this mass of cable hanging out. Is this what I'm meant to do?

If you want that layout at the front to avoid cable rub on the headtube/set you could change the rear layout if the seat stays cable stop is in a kind position. At rear of top tube the rear shift cable on NDS going round seat tube / under seat stays to stop. Front shift cable on DS.

I'll take a picture.

Just switched the cable routing in accordance with this. Here's what it looks like now. I don't have F/R deraileurs set up yet but I think when those are in the housing will be more straight into the ferrules.

Yes, will likely pull the cables into the ferrules as you say. Could also try to (manually) locally bend the outers to help the transition. Looks loads better I think! 👍
