Looks bloody marvelous, great pics and great choice of bike, looks perfect for the event and hopefully inspired a few folks to try vintage steel too. Glad it turned out well, I just might have to do this one myself next time, takes me back to the crazy Polaris events of yore. Well done indeedSo, thanks to @pwebb, a pal and I got hold of free passes to the Gravel Rocks race round the fabulous Duncombe estate in North Yorkshire. It was a proper competitive event over the weekend with a short, sharp night stage and two more long rides over the hills and moors. Original thread.
I opted to ride a 1986 700c clunker I’d built out of an old British Eagle tourer, and was a tad apprehensive that I’d get drummed out of court. But long story short, it’s a great event; excellent welcoming atmosphere; loads of love for the old skool machine; properly testing with some gnarly descents; well organised; superb trails most of which are public bridleway. Highly recommended.
Thanks again Paul. Pics:

Looks like a great route, not sure about the contents of the bap, made with everything swept up off the abattoir floor? Not mountain biking again today, don’t think we got more than a metre above sea level. I keep a map of all the rides I’ve done, the idea being to fill in the gaps, this was one area with a big gap in it.
So a huge loop around the flatlands of Lincolnshire it was! You could see Boston Stump (church tower) from pretty much the whole ride it was so flat.
Despite the lack of elevation still some challenge from the head wind. There’s a certain beauty to the fens too, though I fail to capture it in any of my photos!
An almost traffic free route of about 35 miles.

Interesting (to some!) swing railway bridge across the river.

You know you’re in the depths of Lincolnshire when a haslet bap is offered as a breakfast option.
