Ye you can tell how bright they are not been in sun and the forks
The decals have gone dry. So there flacking off. Will just strip and grease everything first.Yes there are various people who do them. However they aren’t 100% correct.
If your decals are decent I’d certainly keep them.
Yeh, been hung on a wall in a well looked after garage for about 17 years.. that photo is of it literally just lifted off the wall (cobwebs an all).Ye you can tell how bright they are not been in sun and the forks
Get some wind in the tyres and get some miles in, enjoy it while the weather is nice! It’s already rideable (just need to pump the tires up). Unbelievably the brakes and gears all still work fine. Just needs a good clean.
Thanks for the advice mate. I will wash it tomorrow and start working on it. Tyres are inflated now and all good. Tried some car hand glaze on it (used to valet and mop cars). And it was like glass almost instantly.Get some wind in the tyres and get some miles in, enjoy it while the weather is nice!
If you do need to do more - everyone has their own favourite polish for cleaning up that type of frame. Always go with the least abrasive/instrusive method first. You can always work your way up but you’re stuck with a bigger job if you make one bit too shiny or too rough if that makes sense.
If it were me I’d start off with some washing up liquid in water and a micro fibre cloth, maybe an old toothbrush as well and just get it all wiped down, you’d be surprised how much impact that has if you get in to the detail areas with a brush. After that some wd40 or similar on a cloth wiped over it all and the cables/chain lubricated.
It’s only ever been ridden on road. He was never an off roader. He would have had a road bike. But he had a bad back so stuck to mountain bikes. I’ve just had a good look thoughI’d also check carefully around the seat clamp / top tube junction for cracks. Unfortunately 98 was the only year that seems to have this issue.

Oh blimey. Bet I have minimal in mine now I’ve put the seat for my hight. What size seatpost (diameter) was they ?. I will purchase a long one if mines to short.I’ve had many many Zaskars mainly purchased from old guys who “only rode to the shops” and I’ve had 3/4 cracked 98 ones.
It was a weak spot when they moved to the integrated seat clamp design unfortunately.
Make sure you have lots of seat post inserted
