But God have mercy on you if you happen to make a tenner on selling some old crap on ebay.

In theory - yes. In practice, HMRC have no problem bullying people into claiming that they owe them tax when they do not. And it's almost always a "guilty until proven innocent" approach that they take.
Used to deal with them regularly when I worked as an accountant.

What would be your approach if you were HMRC and wanted to get businesses selling online to pay their taxes ?

Again I feel that the small fish isn’t their aim. They are after the big boys who have multiple accounts , turning over big boys cash.

Has anyone figured out how to "easy" post parcel over 65cm? Because afaik RM refuse to take anything longer.
I had some woodworking tools & jigs that ebay's AI figured I can post in a padded envelope. They need a 90cm-long box .
The only way round it that I can think of is to list them in a bike frame category and do custom postage.

I'd go after all the &%$s with offshore accounts first, and big corporates that dodge UK taxes. But that's too much work and too difficult to swallow politically. So yeah, let's see if we can bully private sellers into overpaying taxes instead.

But nothing has changed apart from now eBay report the sales back to HMRC as previously they didn’t. The tax has always been due but now they have more data to chase it.

If you are a private seller then you have no worries and nothing has changed.

If you are a business who is pretending to be a private seller then possibly you need to worry dependant on your size , luck and efficiency of HMRC.

Tax avoidance vs Tax evasion are totally different things.

Not all politicians are wealthy and avoiding taxes.
It's not fair to characterise them all like that.
I don't think you'll find hmrc after someone whose made a tenner on ebay either.
