from memory the Mavic converter was a brake bridge with a second set of bosses about an inch up it. they worked well and acted a lot like a brake booster, the only downside was it limited your tyre size, but as it was mainly used for road wheels in a MTB that was never an issue.

philistine, don't you know 26" wheels don't roll as fast?

the reason I used to do this sort of shinanigan was price. a 26" conti in sensible road width of 28c was 40 quid an end. a 25c (or dare I say it back then a 23c) in 700c size conti was 15-20 quid.
a saving of 40 quid was a lot of beers back then (because I drank pish).

I run Litepro Long arm v-brakes on my Kona hot with 700c wheels.. (pics below from when i had my rockhopper on 700c)

the pad adjustment is huge up and down and they fit 700c wheels on the standard bosses!
Used with decent brake pads they're plenty powerful enough for skinny tyres..
