Just a side note if someone else is dabbling with this kind of thing, I'll pass this warning on.

There are several interesting older touring style cranks from Stronglight with many crank lengths out there, but another
whole minefield opens up if you want to use them for a Retro-mod build:

a) sometimes they are JIS, sometimes ISO tapers sometimes, I don't think they even know themselves.
b) really obscure BCDs sadly obsolete so chances of finding modern ramped / pinned 10 or 11 speed rings is virtually impossible.
c) sometimes standard pedal threads, sometimes obsolete French pedal threads, at least this is clearly stamped on them.
d) and, it appears there are variations in the extractor thread dimensions......

The more recent Stronglight cranks in retro aesthetics are known to be produced by Sugino.

Ha ha ! I have a couple of Impact's in a box because of the axle irregularities . I dont think they'll ever get used.
I have another Dawes with a 730 on it but it's out on loan atm . However I have a tentative arrangement to see it tomorrow , if i do I'll take an extractor an a ruler.........

My experience with a second hand Impact didn't go very well either. The only benefit was crossing it off the "Potential List" !!!!

Not the first time I have done this. This was well and properly stuck due to a dry mount with massive (and successive?) overtightening, the axle was almost at the edge of the crank taper. Of course, stripped extractor threads from a previous attempt (and owner). I could have attempted using...

I'm a bit confused by this thread. You seem to suggest that the only road chainsets are the 130bcd ones. Thats not true. Compacts have been with us for 10 years or so and are 110 bcd. So, you can gear down and being lighter than mtb chainsets and having a smaller Q factor are more suited to road riding

There have been 110bcd road chainsets around far longer than 10 years Sugino XA chainsets were 110bcd way back in the 80's

If you do buy a BB and find the axle a few mm short to clear the chainstay, insert a washer behind the fixed cup to push it out. It's the same as a modern cassette spacer.
