Just bought a 15.5" Stumpy from Emoco (getting posted tomorrow ) :D so i'm trying to source the right size front derailleur. Problem is that bikepedia states the '97 issue as having a 35mm seat tube (isn't this meant to be 34.9mm), whereas the '98 issue states a 31.8mm seat tube. Here's a link to some close ups that may help someone here identify the frames year for me.

I think your frame is a 98 and I think your seat tube is a 34.9.

I think the bikepedia entry must be wrong in saying 31.8, as it also says that the seat post was a 30.9. A 31.8 ED tube that had an ID of >30.9 would be too thin to keep baked beans in, let alone build a bike out of it.

I'm pretty sure the seat post was indeed a 30.9 - the 99 seat post certainly was, plus 97, so why not 98? So I think the tube must be a 34.9.

bikepedia is often wrong andsome of those things are obvious. Saw one entry where seat post was 30.9mm and the seat tube was only 28.6mm

To my limited knowldge all alloy stumpys use 34.9mm front mechs

Cheers for the replies guys, if my current XT mech was a bottom pull then i wouldn't even have to buy a new one - but at least i now know the correct size etc, 34.9 Bottom Pull. Cheers again

EDIT / UPDATE:

I just bought a vernier guage caliper and have now found to have the following:

Ext Seat Tube = 36mm
Int Seat Tube = 30.9mm

...so i think it's a 36.4mm Seat Clamp & a 30.9mm Seat Post that i need. Strangely enough i am using a 34.9mm front mech which seems to fine.
